posted this on another thread but dont know if anyone saw it or not so i made my own topic.

Couple of questions about using the spoons. I have never used a spoon in my life so bear with me. I was wondering if you tend to use a baitcaster or a spinning rig when you are throwing these? I was also reading Bill B's post and he said that he uses a ball bearing swivel about a foot up the line which is understandable to keep the line twist minimized. I always try to use the least amount of knots i can get away with on any rig. (I have used the little red carolina keepers for years and thought i was the only lazy person on the rock to use them until i heard Bill or someone else say that they also use them also. Made me not feel so bad anymore ;)) That being said does anyone use the ball bearing swivel with a snap lock attached? That is one knot instead of 3. Just wondering. Also, does anyone change out the trebles on them with just single hooks? Ive heard hook up ratio with fish is the same with either the treble or single but the single is much less likely to snag, is easier to unsnag and is undoubtedly easier on the fishes mouth. Thoughts/help/advice/suggestions on any of this fellas?

Concerning buzzbaits, which i have seldom thrown but would like to give it a whirl, when is a good time of year to throw them on the Rock if at all? What colors? People that throw them here...do u prefer the inline style or the more standard spinnerbait looking style? What type of structure/locations would u use them on?

Thanks for any help fellas. Hoping to getting down this weekend (Sun-Tues).

Brett:

I prefer to use a tandem blade buzzbait like the Booyah Counterstrike. It is a safety pin style bait with two in line blades that rotate in opposite directions and click against each other. I fish black or white, but mostly black.

I have had success on TR with these either post spawn, or in the fall when the fish begin to move from deep water to creeks and pockets. Like topwaters of all sorts, I have better luck in low light situations. However, the best single day string I ever caught was on a Labor Day weekend in 100 degree heat. I was fishing a buzzbait in a slough off the Verdigris River in Oklahoma and burning it past and over laydowns. The fish had no deepwater to find shelter and were laying in the shade of the timber.

The best spots I have found for buzzbait fishing on TR also involve timber and laydowns. Near Shell Knob and in the Kings, there are several timber messes in the water that have given up fish to me on buzz bait. The best I've found is up here near Holiday Island, but I hope you'll forgive me if I don't say exactly where.

I'll leave the spoon question for others.

Good luck.

As for spooning goes, im no expert but I will tell you what i like. I recently started using the strike king flutter spoons on the deep docks. I always change out the back hook to a treble with white feathers. I also buy some paint pens and put some red on it. As for a regular jigging spoon i like white war eagle spoons. I fish the big spoon on 12 - 15 lb fluro. And the little spoon on 10-12 lbs fluro. ALways on a bait caster for me. I use my 7 ft jig rod and never had a problem.
