I fished near to Dave one day at Rim Shoals. He is such a gem of a guy.

Way back when I called Emily and asked what a day with Dave cost.. was around $500.

PLUS, Brian, this is at his place in Oklahoma... That makes it even more better-er... LOL....

A day fishing with the man is worth a ton. The things you pick up by mere osmosis being with him is unreal...

Gather 'round young lads and lasses', for I am about to tell a tale of one of the greatest fisherman to wade this fair land. The tale of your own personal, old soul, Wheatenheimer and the Esquire, Sir David Whitlock.

No, I never got the chance to fish with Sir Whitlock, but I did spend many an hour with the "Noble" one over a course of many years. This was back in the day that I was honorably employed by the legacy airline that I won't mention the name of, but our initial's were TWA.

This was when Sir Whitlock was residing in Mountain Home and would frequently fly out of the humble land referred to as Springfield. Leaving our fair land the only stop along the path of anywhere was a far away land, yet close enough to reach by a mechanical bird...........Saint Louis. So keeping this in mind, this land had an airport that was designed in the era of smaller propeller driven aircraft and they felt as though it was a good idea to construct runways side by side to accommodate the air traffic that so desired this majestic land. The only problem was, as the airplanes grew in size, the runway's remained the same.

Now that the larger birds were bringing all the wonderful people from all around the world to this enchanted land, the pavement could not accommodate during inclement weather. So, to make a long story longer, I spent many hours with Sir Whitlock, in our hamlet we call Springfield, anxiously awaiting a time when our mechanical bird could find a slot into the mystical Saint Louis to carry him on to destinations such as......Patagonia........New Zealand........Mongolia............New Jersey...........etc.

I treasure these moments, my children. For Sir Dave was always a true gentleman, even when everything that had any relation to the process of air travel made it's way to becoming entirely and completely screwed up (which was often) this noble being was always no less than pleasant as pea salad! He would talk to me about streams and lakes and flats. Then hatches and patterns and materials for as long as the delay would last. As fine of a gentleman as they come!

If any of you ever get a chance to meet this noble man, shake his hand and let him know that Wheatenheimer say's Thank You!

I used to write back and forth to dave ALOT. we exchanged stories, flies, drawings etc etc. i have a couple of hand written letters, original, colored pencil hand drawings on letters, envelopes, and even he sent me a hand tied whitlock sculpin, the VHS on how to tie it and autographed that for me too. He is a real stand up guy. I should write back to him this season and see what he is up too.

That guy is a very good friend of mine. He is thrilled. I would have thought it would go for more.....but maybe the bad economy, etc.
