Members stldr Posted October 8, 2009 Members Posted October 8, 2009 Lots of tricos. And a few Caddis but not a whole bunch. Now that it's cool and sometimes cloudy, are the Baetis (blue winged olives) hatching in the afternoons? I would the conditions have been pretty good for them recently. Also what time are the midges hatching, if they're hatching? Thanks, Derek
Members jgentile Posted October 14, 2009 Members Posted October 14, 2009 Nortrad, Funny to see your response about the two spin anglers. That was my friend and I who came up stream to you. It was Monday, Labor day. We hit Tan Vat at sunrise that morning and went upstream and then worked our way back. The water was really low with a little tinge to it. We started pretty hot with marabou jigs and then switched to rapalas. The fishing was good pretty much all day. All of our fish were caught in less than 2" of water except that last brownie that Andy caught just upstream of you. I personally thought he was encroaching on your spot somewhat. I was the guy dragging butt a little who came up behind him. Funny to see your post as it was exactly how it happened. Small world. Joe
Members jdixon Posted October 14, 2009 Members Posted October 14, 2009 jgentile I was at tan vat parking lot when you pulled in and parked (green jeep). fished downstream, usually do pretty good but definatly a slow day, sounds like spin fishing was the way to go. I was thinking it was becouse it was the tail end of the holiday weekend, guess not.
Nortrad Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 Sooner or later we will all cross paths. Your bud could have given me a little more room but I'm cool. That was a beautiful day like you said. Only wish I could have gotten into more fish. Went out last Sunday and got three, 16" brown the top one. He was injured, but feisty. He had punctured gill plate that was healing. I've caught a lot of injured fish the last year on the Current. Trying again soon. Some of your spin fishing brethren were above me at Tan Vat and I saw one guy fighting a trout at the first deadfall.
Members jgentile Posted October 15, 2009 Members Posted October 15, 2009 Dixon/Nortrad, Small world indeed. Nice to run into you guys here. Hope to see you on the river soon. You know the funny thing about that day was that there were a few spots were you could see trout stacked up like fire wood. One was at the dead fall just upstream from the beach at TV. Another was just downstream from the waste processing plant. Both relatively deeper holes. I thought we were rather stealthy in our approach but nothing doing here. These spots have always been productive in the spring and early summer. Fish were rising on whatever bugs came around but had no interest in 1/32 marabous or the raps. Tight lines, Joe
Nortrad Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 I've fished both those holding pools and have only gotten one out of the upper one where the river turns from the park, I used a big stonefly that my wife bought for me in CO. After catching that one I promptly snagged up on the bottom and lost it. I've seen big boys stacked up in there. I fished the first pool out of TV also, but no dice. They were rising to tiny Tricos, sipping. It was cool to watch, and a guy lent me a fly who was camped there, but no go. He yanked a 4 lb. bow out of there early that morning. He said they shut down at about 8AM or so. Last Sunday a spin angler got one out of there. It was really bending his outfit down when I looked down at them. I was fishing down from TV. A report is coming soon...
Members streamcreeper Posted October 15, 2009 Members Posted October 15, 2009 I was down on sunday and monday i didnt do very well but my buddy hooked into more fish fish. There were some caddis coming off and i was able to get one to rise and and take my caddis on a long drift. most fish were holding deep i mean almost all of the fish we caught came right off the bottom they were taking egg patterns and we hooked a couple stripping big streamers a couple on scuds. As for that first dead fall holding fish i caught the biggest rainbow of my life last summer out of there on a size 18 zebra midge and my two buddies caught fish out of there also. That day i saw at least three fish that were over 18 inches swimming just below the surface on the opposite bank along that log i got one of them. Also yes i did release the fish, i got a quick picture and revived her and she swam off to fight another day. release fish, preserve the outdoors
Nortrad Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 That fly is a go-to one. Another variation is a #16 Zebra Copper John, silver bead. Did you cast in above or below the deadfall? My fishing bud nailed a fish every time we were above there for a bunch of trips, you know the glide just upstream from there. He knows how to read water much better than me. So where's the pic of the big 'bow?
