oneshot Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 Misting rain yesterday thought what the heck I'm not going to get any Deer setting in the house so I went over on Goverment Land. Set up in a holler running out into some clover. Here comes couple Fawns and a Doe.The Fawns fed going away from me the Doe came back towards me.I shoot her,she takes off running holding one Front Leg up. I go down find all but about 8 inches of my Arrow.Could hear Deer running in a circle around me.I start following Blood, good spray just not heavy as I like.Followed it around a point going into a draw.I thought well she went up this draw which is where I heard Deer.Lost Blood but I walked on up the draw, nothing. Was marking Blood, found Blood going uphill.Thought this is not looking good.Thought its getting dark I'm going to wait until morning. Was out there at daylight still misting rain.Found my last Blood, thought ok she is running on the upper part of this draw.Thought ok I will just circle up through the brush.Nothing, thought dummy you need to get back and pick up the Blood Trail again. Went back to last blood was making half circles, found more blood going uphill.Found just a little still going up.Lost it,thought Lord help me out.Looked on up there she was laying in a depression. oneshot

sms_alum Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 I'd have to agree with oneshot on this. Those fawns are alright to be on there own by now, and if they're not they wouldn't have made it through the winter. Unlike the bass you fish for the deer in most areas of Missouri are getting too thick. Thinning out the population by taking several deer is encoraged by the conservation department with hunters being able to apply for several tags especially during the bow seasons.
PHhunter Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 A fawn this time of year is in no need of its "mother" to survive. Most of them are already run off by their own "mother" or a buck pursuing their mother. That is nature. Actually by killing their "mother", oneshot probally gave all deer in the area a better chance of surviving as killing mature does that are successful at reproducing is the only managment technique proven to prevent overpopulation and disease. Thanks, oneshot for helping the deer herd. Also, deer have no feelings, and will not even remeber their "mother" for more than a couple of days. It is no unethical to shoot any deer in a legal method and to imply so is irresponsible.
zander Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 From a biologist perspective when the doe goes into estrus in the next week to month she will have stopped lactating 90% of the time anyway. The fawns at this point can learn just as much from other members of the herd as from their own mother and were not dependant on her for any significant amount of nutrition or food, even if it was still lactating it would have stopped soon enough anyway. It is good to have feelings about things, but in this case you needn't worry about the fawns Whack 'em.
Whack'emGood Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 Okay, I give up. Oneshot is a genuis... anyone can see that. Great job Oneshot! I'm going to fish my style and make it work for me." -KEVIN VANDAM "Confidence is the best lure in your tackle box." -GERALD SWINDLE "A-Rig? Thanks, but no thanks. If I can't catch them on the conventional tackle that I already use, then I guess I just can't catch them." -LK (WHACK'EM)
