troutgnat Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 To everyone, Rarely do we ever hear of any other trout fishing methods on here outside of bait or fly. I think it would be real interesting to learn of different methods to catch trout on Taneycomo. If you fish lures by cast or troll please share your input. Let's open this thread up! I believe this could get real interesting!!! Darren Sadler "Fishing is an Education...Often the fish 'school' me, yet I do not complain. I just keep going to class!"
troutchaser Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 I'm pretty partial to Rapala medium sink lures. I troll them when there's not much water running. Little Cleo lures are really fun to fish, as well. And what self respecting trout tackle box doesn't have a handful of panther martins and rooster tails in it! Paul Rone

Troutchaser, I have seen Little Cleo's in the shops around the lake but never thought twice about them. Are you trolling these? I assume that your speaking of the Rapala countdown minnow.? I have a pile of these(used to be a sales rep for Rapala). Funny thing is I have never fished the countdown, duh! fly2fish Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 After all of the high water last year I spent 75% of my time jig fishing at night. Since the fish were hanging close to the bottom, Leonard turned me on to tying the same fly patterns that are used at night streamers, PMS, and pine squirrel sculpin on an 1/8 jig head was the ticket. I still don't come to Taney without my spinning rod in tow and an assortment of jigs just in case they are running 2 units or more. Last year and just recently the jigs caught smallmouth, kentuckies, white bass, crappie, googleeye, walleye, largemouth, and both rainbows and browns. I have found that jig fishing is best with at least 2 units running to get a good bounce or slow roll going, any less and the jig just sits and gets hung up more often. On a side note weekend before last I had some guys try and steal my spinning rod while I was at outlet 1. I had taken both my fly rod that I had just bought from another OAF member that day and spinning rod down to the access just below outlet 1 parking lot. I knew there was at least 3 people at the outlet, I usually leave the rod I am not using leaning against a tree or brush close to the waters edge. When I see someone coming I turn and put the light on the rod so they can see it, in this case I had waded out a ways to get to the current and had to wade back in. There were 2 young foreign guys (not south of the border) late teens that had start down, I met them and talked with them for a while and they said they had been at outlet 1 with 2 others with them and they were going back down there. After a while I thought they were leaving and went down to outlet 1 and all 4 were still there and I tried to get through the brush and above the point , no dice. I went back to the stairs and they told me to wade out on the steps if I wanted and I told them I would show them how to drift with a lighted indicator. I leaned my spinning rod against a tree while I was showing them a lighted indicator, after about 5 minutes of drifting 3 of the younger guys left and only an older man with them stayed. When the older man started to leave I noticed my rod was gone. I followed him back to the parking lot and asked them if they had mistakenly picked up an extra rod. At first they acted like they didn't know what I was talking about then one of them reached in the back of their car and pulled it out and said one of the other guys said get his rod and he thought it was theirs. I don't know how they could have mistaken my rod for theirs because they had their reels DUCT TAPED to their rods! Anyway I got my rod back and went back down and had a productive night. F2F
Brian K. Shaffer Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 I used biscuit dough for a spell. A guy told me to grind up the pellet food in it. It worked.. but boy was it rough on the fish. That's back in the old days... in the long long ago. Like 1994ish. Good topic Darren. Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.

Yeah! the countdown lures! I knew they had a name for 'em. I like the 1" or 1-1/2" rainbow trout. I'd like to try the brown trout or brook trout patterns in the same size, but I haven't found them in the stores around here. I have another favorite, but I can't recall the name of it, either. It's a flat metal piece bent into a U shape with a hook at the bend. If I figure out the name, I'll tell you about it. I know Bass Pro has them, as does Wal-Mart. **EDIT** They're called Lil' Jake Lures. I love those things for trout. Cast and troll 'em. They're great! Paul Rone
troutgnat Posted October 28, 2009 Author Posted October 28, 2009 Forgive me if I am wrong but I believe this lure your speaking of now is a Super Duper. Darren Sadler "Fishing is an Education...Often the fish 'school' me, yet I do not complain. I just keep going to class!"
tippet7 Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 Forgive me if I am wrong but I believe this lure your speaking of now is a Super Duper. Both the "little jakes" and "super duper" are about the same sytle. the super duper is thinner and wiggles much more (i think so) than the jakes. little jakes super duper You are so stupid you threw a rock at the ground and missed.
troutchaser Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 Yep, it's the Jakes I use. I don't know why I haven't done it, but I'd be curious to know if anyone has had success on Taneycomo with a Johnson's Silver Minnow. Paul Rone
