Donna G Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 Techo, since I about blew my coffee out my nose, I guess the answer is no, you didn't offend. However, I've been told that the real reason there is a discrepancy in measurement between men and women is because we girls have problems with depth perception. Funny thing. There are some days in the boat when I can call 'em short or keeper with fair accuracy and other days I'm having to measure 17-inchers. It's weird. Champ rarely has that problem, but on a couple of recent trips he had me measure 14" fish I was positive wouldn't keep and even one that was 13". Guess we all have our days. I think ours relate more to old age and bad eyes. lol BTW, after Champ gets in the boat from the courtesy dock when he's backed me in, he stands there with his hands on his hips looking down from his 6'4" till I get out from behind the wheel. You might try that. I'm proud of you for teaching your wife to back the trailer. I'm getting better at it all the time, but I'm still uncomfortable on crowded ramps and during tournaments. My trainer has been very encouraging, though. What I really want now is some hands on instruction for approaching a crowded courtesy dock - with Champ in the boat directing. Hear that Champ? Have a great weekend. Whack'emGood Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 Nobody is gonna offend or hurt Donna's feelings... She is tougher than all of us put together! Thanks for the report T. I love reports that are both informative and funny. I hope you and your boy do well today. My dad and me are going tomorrow and will be flinging jigs at them-- hoping to catch a few and enjoy the weather. Whack'em "Success builds confidence, and you have to learn to trust your instincts and forget about fishing the way a tournament is supposed to be won. I'm going to fish my style and make it work for me." -KEVIN VANDAM "Confidence is the best lure in your tackle box." -GERALD SWINDLE "A-Rig? Thanks, but no thanks. If I can't catch them on the conventional tackle that I already use, then I guess I just can't catch them." -LK (WHACK'EM)
techo Posted November 6, 2009 Author Posted November 6, 2009 Whew! Glad no one was offended. Respect and courtesy are important to me. Ranger Z22, I bet we have bumped into each other and didn't know it. I think there was a thread somewhere about stickers, flags or tattoos so we could recognize an OAF brother or sister. I drive a blue Ford F150 with a LARGE Skeeter sticker in the back window. Chance, my son, and I went out today. It was a bit on the breezy side. The nice thing about the wind is it gives you a directon on where to start fishing. We started late again. We went to Mill Creek. They were doing something on the KC bridge, but we were lucky and didn't get held up at all. Some guys were working on the blacktop at Mill Creek and stopped what they were doing, moved a pile of tar, and waved us in. If any of you guys read this.....THANK YOU! I felt like royalty. The ramp is looking sweet with lines marking parking spots and everything. There are some large boulders under the water on the ramp a guy should keep his eyes open for. We fished around the Mill Creek area and saw a guy fishing out of a red and white Cobra. I could see he was fishing top water and would catch one on occasion. We tried some top water, but no luck. I had Chance try a spinner and a wiggle wart. I tried the spinner for a bit, but went to the (drum roll please).......Eakins Jig. I drug that thing so slow that I could feel it barely moving on the bottom. On occassion I would feel it get heavier, like it was being drug through the mud. Finally I reeled down the slack so my rod tip was just about touching the water and set the hook on that mud. I ended up with a Kentucky that measured 16 inches. I have a pic of it on my iphone, but haven't figured out how to post it on here with the phone. It isn't really large enough to post the pic anyway, but looked huge after yesterday. We caught three more Kentuckys in the same area on the jig. All of them could have been the same fish as they were the same size. We caught them in 18-22 feet of water dragging really really slow. We were on secondary points with rocks and some sort of trees nearby. We decided to head to Schooners, but went to visit with the fella in the Cobra first. He told us he had caught the fish early on the spook, but it had dropped off now. He said he couldn't get them to bite the jig at all. He said he was headed to Schooner, so we decided to head another direction. We moved out toward point 9 and fished some windy sides of the main points in the area. We caught alot of little healthy looking smallmouth. Fighters for sure. None of them would have weighed in a tournament though. I am not sure how many we caught. All on the Eakins jig. I did mark some fish stacked up in 45 feet of water. We never tried the shaky head or drop shotting them. Tim Carpenter

I have seen too many guys not have the patience or when they let them try they wind up skreeming and yelling at the wife, wich in turn makes her nervouse and ruins the whole learning thing. WAY TO GO GUYS. I COMEND YOU FOR THIS! Becky B
champ187xr6 Posted November 7, 2009 Posted November 7, 2009 Good Read Techo! I got a real chuckle out of it. Glad to hear you got the wife and son in on the action. Does not get any better than that!
Ranger Z22 Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 Techo I (we) drive a Red Yukon, 99.9% of the time, my wife is driving and backs the boat in the water, boat red/white. She won't let me back the boat in--she knows I will make a fool of myself. She decided 36 years ago, I was no track star, running back and forth from the truck to the boat, and why add to the show of people who can't put their boat in, or take it out. I am first to admit, I am very luckly. I will be on the lookout z22
