Members Jabber Jaw Posted November 12, 2009 Members Posted November 12, 2009 Hello all, I probably won't be posting often because I really don't have anything to add to the discussions because I don't know much about fishing, but I may have questions from time to time. I have 2 sons, Max is 8 and Sam is 6. My husband died a little over a year ago in a car accident. I need to learn how to fish the same way he did for my boys. He used to take them fishing every chance he got and the boys really miss it, and him. I tried to take them fishing myself a while back, but I only know how to fish with a bobber and worms. Max got really upset with me and called that baby fishing (I think he got that from his Dad) and refused to go. My husband had all kinds of lures, rods, reels, etc, and I couldn't make myself get rid of it, so I decided I needed to learn what all of it is and how to use it. I will try not to bother all of you with a bunch of dumb questions, but from time to time I may ask you for a clarification of the terms used on the forum if I can't figure it out for myself and to make sure I am understanding what I am reading. My goal is to surprise the boys by learning just enough to be able to take them fishing myself for their spring break from school. Do any of you know if there is a Fishing For Dummies book? DaddyO Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 Jabber Jaw, If you feel comfortable listing your city and state, I think that you will find that there are several gentlemen on this forum that will be kind enough to teach you how to use the fishing poles and lures that you have now. If you do not feel comfortable doing that, you will also find that we will provide lots of answers to your various questions anyway. I applaud your efforts, either way. Members goggleeyes Posted November 12, 2009 Members Posted November 12, 2009 Jabber Jaw, I would like to tell you your boys are very blessed to have you as a mother. Fishing can be such a great way to connect and bond with them as they grow up. I'm sure most everyone here would be honored to help you in any way we can, just let us know! Your boys love for fishing is pretty cool at their young ages, and it will probably only grow as it is fed.
Wayne SW/MO Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 I will try not to bother all of you with a bunch of dumb questions, I wouldn't worry about that, it will inflate our egos a little. Some may comment negatively, but that won't be a reflection of the vast majority on the board. If you were to feel comfortable posting a county, or a region, it would help for the members to direct you to good sources. At any rate feel free to ask away without any feelings of bothering anyone. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

I am still trying to figure out this forum and where everything is located. Whatever and how I learn has to be away from the boys for now because I am trying to keep all of this a secret until I spring "the surprise" on Max and Sam during spring break. I do have some basic knowledge, like I know how to cast, and I can tie on a hook and the now useless bait a hook, remove a fish from the hook, etc and I am not afraid to break a nail or get my hands dirty, so that's a start. I just moved back to SW Missouri from Texas to be close to family. For a year I tried to do it all alone and by myself and I finally realized I wasn't doing any of us any favors. Jabber Jaw

When I took him perch jerking he fished a while, then played with the worms, then fished for a while. He had a great time though and he did catch 2 little blue gills.

eric1978 Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 Welcome to the forum and my condolences go out to you. Sounds like your kids are lucky to have a great mom. You've come to the right place to get info on fishing. The folks here are very friendly and willing to help with anything they can. If I were you, I'd take Chief up on his offer and let him take you and the kids out a couple times. He's a good guy and if anyone can teach you to fish around your neck of the woods, it's him. It won't take long to figure out the basics and start catching fish so you can take your kids out on your own. It's only as complicated as you want it to be! In the meantime, ask all the questions you want. Everyone here had to learn to fish at some point, and somebody probably taught them!
