I mainly use 6-7x for my fish, and sometimes the knots, no matter how tight i cinch them, just slip off, and the fish/fly is gone. I don't have trouble with the #8 conehead woolybuggers, but on the smaller stuff #18 and down. I really don't get enough time anually to experiment with knots on stream, so I try to make every minute as productive as possible. Which one of these knots would work best on these small guys?

Rob,

I only use one knot and that is my Davy knot, do not underestimate its strength.

I have hooked and landed many trophy fish in my lifetime using this knot and fine tippet, 6/7x and 8x at times.

There is no knot that is 1005 perfect, and when fishing with real fine tippet, you are not going to land them all.

I would suggest that you spend some time while in the house during this cold spell paractising to tie your knots.

Always moisten a knot before you snug it taught. And when you have done so give it a test to make sure there is no slip.

The only other explanation is you may well be using way too much force with your hook sets, that costing you the fly and the fish.

You will figure it out..

Davy.

Thanks for the info. I don't know why I haven't heard of the Davy knot by now. I've been looking for a quick, secure and easy to tie knot. The next question I have is what is a good quick knot (like the Davy) that you can use for tippet to leader? Including flourocarbon to poly. I've been trying to use the double surgeon's but seem to fight it on the stream.

I use the perfection loop. I ususally cut the first 18 inches or so off my leader, tie in the perfection loop, tie a perfection loop to the tippet and just loop to loop the two. This way all I have to do is add tippet as I use it up..Dano

If memory serves me, the first episode of Fly Fishing America with John Wilson guiding Joe Humphries, John showed Joe the Davy knot... That was the first time I heard of it.

Davy, I want a one-on-one quick demo on tying that knot properly at Sowbug... Will you be tying Saturday? Maybe I can make it to Bolivar... maybe not...
