smallmouthjoe Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 Well I had time to go fishing after my BIO final today and I decided to go over to my friends farm out toward Ash Grove and fish The Sac. I felt I deserved it because I aced a final that I didn't have to ace in order to maintain an A. I walked off of the MSU campus at 9:30 and was at the river by 10:20, started fishing around noon because I had a couple of cups of coffee with my friend who owns the farm when I arrived. The fishing wasn't all that great, I only manged to land three fish all about 10 to 12. One came on a x-rap on an errant cast into the middle of the current. The other two came out of wood in slack water on the shakyhead with what is becoming one of my favorite colored finesse worms, green pumpkin with purple flake. Two days of fishing in a row. I can tell already that it's going to be tough to try to work more over winter break. And I do have tomorrow off, the only thing I have to do is study a little for one more final. I may go check on the fish behind The Dam tomorrow. Take care.

Who can't wait for the walleye and white bass run this year... Only caught a few whites and one 8 inch walleye last year - but feeling good about this year. hopefully no big rains and following cold fronts...

Who can't wait for the walleye and white bass run this year... This is the last semester of my junior year, but it is only my second semester at MSU. I'm a wildlife bio. major and I can't express in written word how much I enjoy studying it. What is your area of study and who are you studying under if you don't mind sharing it with me? I have never fished The Sac white bass run but I have heard good things about it. How far do they push up stream? Besides my friends farm I have had trouble locating additional access points to The Sac, do you have any suggestions? Thanks
mhall02 Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Hey smallmouthjoe, I see your a wildlife bio. mjr. What would like to do with that mjr? I graduated from MU in '93 with a BS in Fisheries and Wildlife, but found the job pickings pretty slim. Numerous hourly positions with MU and MDC, but a salaried positions are few and far in between. That especially seemed true for a Caucasian male at that time. Worked hourly for a couple of years on some cool projects, but it wasn't enough to really pay the bills. Saw the writing on the wall so it was time to move on. Have been an environmental consultant for nearly 13 years now and have ran into a few others I graduated with doing the same. Good luck, maybe MSU has a better placement program for their graduates than MU did.

Thanks Well, I've also heard great things - but did pretty lousy last year - seems like I missed the times when they were on fire, and was there during the muddy or cold water. The 215 bridge is good late, but the only 'success' I've had is on a walleye and a few whites at the Taylor bridge. I can't remember the road it is on - one of the ones off of hwy 215 - perhaps someone else remembers. I had more walleye success walking the dam last year during the spawn though - and white bass come to think of it... Hopefully this year we'll get some good rains early, and some warm steady weather - I'll be graduating, and this may be my last fishing season down this way for a while. I'm working with Dr. Weaver - doing immunology/microbiology.

It's been a good number of years since I was up on Little Sac at Taylor to launch and run but this should get you there ...... Take 50th st off 123/215 just after Eudora run it north til it T's go right follow it to the river. 50th is right on a curve to the left on the highway all you really do is keep going straight north off the highway. Hope you have better luck this year!
smallmouthjoe Posted January 14, 2010 Author Posted January 14, 2010 Thanks for the spots. If anyone hears of the run let me know, I didn't get a chance to fish for white bass last year on The James because of school and work. I can't remember when spring break is but I hope it coincides with the white bass run this year.
