Members kcbear Posted December 23, 2009 Members Posted December 23, 2009 I just finished loading all 55 of the brush piles/fish structures that I am aware of on Stockton. It took me quite a while to do it-- lots of key strokes on my Garmin hand held. Does anyone else use GPS to locate points on the lake? Do these little contraptions actually work? I would like to hear your experiences with modern technology and fishing. I am from the old school. Used to be when I found a good spot, I would just put an "X" on it in the bottom of my boat !! Can't wait for a decent day to try out my new toy-- let me hear from you.
Fishmeister Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 kcbear, It has been awhile since I put those on my Garmin, but if I remember right I just hooked my handheld up to the computer and downloaded the waypoints. If I understood you right you manually entered the waypoints? Wow, that would take some time. As far as do they work yea they will get you to the structure, alot depends on the accuracy of your gps. Members kcbear Posted December 23, 2009 Author Members Posted December 23, 2009 Fishmeister, I don't think my Garmin is capable of computer connection. It is an eTrex H-- bought at Bass Pro last week. Small, hand held. Literature doesn't indicate ability to hook up to computer. I told them I just wanted to be able to enter at least 100 way points because I intend to use this one only for Stockton. I see no ports or connections. Very simple model, but about all I want to try and master!!! Some day I'll be there full time and will have all the best spots memorized! Still need to work some for another year or so. KC Bear
zarraspook Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 KCBEAR, The GPS has a smaller area of accuracy on the water than in the trees or tall buildings... I have seen my GPS down to a 6 foot circle of accuracy... most of the time it will be 10 -12 foot... If you are in a 16 foot boat then when you get to the point on the GPS, your brush pile will be less than a boat length from that spot ... They really great if you put out your own brush piles (he-he).... "Look up OPTIMIST in the dictionary - there is a picture of a fishing boat being launched"
Fishmeister Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 Kcbear, Gotcha, I think mine is a Garmin Legend, probably one model up from yours, and probably the only difference is the ability to download from the computer, not for sure though. I agree with zarraspook, your handheld will be pretty accurate when out on the water.
Dutch Posted December 24, 2009 Posted December 24, 2009 You can not expect your unit to be spot on every time you use it. There are several things which can cause errors (the position of the satellites in relation to you, the condition of the atmosphere, the surrounding terrain and the reflectivity caused by it, and the US Government and what they will allow your unit to do on a particular day), just to name a few.
Members kcbear Posted December 28, 2009 Author Members Posted December 28, 2009 Thank you to everyone that responded to my post regarding GPS. Your information and experiences with it at Stockton will be most helpful. It may be a little while before I get to try it out-- Boat is double covered, but has about 10 inches of snow on it right now-- Next thing I will be wanting to know is "Are the ramps open, and is the lake not frozen?" Some guys (like me) are never satisfied--always asking questions!!! Thanks again. KC Bear
Dutch Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 I talked with the COE and DNR today about the ramps. Both groups said they were not clear yet and with more snow coming on Wed it may be a while before they do clear up.
