jdmidwest Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 Nice toy! Now ya got me thinking. Because of the current ammo crunch and high prices, I have been planning on getting a Walther P22. It's a semi-auto a lot like my center fire pistols. The only other "cowboy" pistol I have is a Ruger Superblackhawk. Fun to shoot, but since a basement finish project, my loading bench is out of operation for a while. 44mag or even 44spcl can burn up a lot of $$ for plinking. A S/A 22 would also be fun to take with me squirrel hunting. Knocking over a couple bushy tails on the ground with a revolver would be good practice for the 44mag during deer season. I own a P-22. It only shoots CCI Mini Mags, all the rest have problems jamming on the second round. It is not very accurate. Get a Ruger MK2 or 3, Browning Buckmark, or Single Six for some good accurate shooting. Or get one of the Heritage 22's, they work good too. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson

JD did a good job summing up what I have had experience with when it came to handgun in rim. I would have gotten a single six but they are hardly ever found used and even rarer in my price range...lol Some swear there 10/22s are the cats meow but I don't want to have to rebuild a new gun to make it reliable or have a nice trigger. I have shot several hundred rounds from both the HRR and the Henry and neither have failed to fire any thing I have put threw them yet. Longs, shorts, CB's, lots of Fed bulk LR, even some golden that peeps are complaining about not firing. I did have to paint the front blade on both tho the eyes are aging faster than the rest of me. Gatorjet Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 I have read a lot of posts on several firearms forums about the P22's. They seem like a hit or miss, some report no problems others nothing but problems. A lot of concern with the die cast slide, early models had faulty magazines, etc. The "pot metal" slide really doesn't bother me. I also have a Henry, a Golden Boy 22 mag. It to, has what could be called a "pot metal" receiver, Braslite. Top notch accuracy isn't my major concern. I have a very accurate High Standard HD Military for that. It's like fine wine, old but very good. The thought of thge P22 was something to shoot with that is close to several of my center fire semi-autos, full slide, poly frame, fixed sight. The Sig Mosquito would be another. Along with the Chiappa 1911-22 (an ergonomic clone of my 1911's). Both are also die cast. Hum, after all this, I have confused MY SELF!!! I think I just go and buy another deer rifle! LOL Real men go propless!
jdmidwest Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 Per Smith and Wesson when I sent mine back for repair, no problems found, shoot CCI Mini Mags. Amazing that someone would develop a 22 lr pistol to only shoot one type of ammo. It was certainly not the quality of the Walther PPK 22 lr that I grew up shooting on the farm. I have owned several Ruger 10-22's, all have shot well out of the box. I have owned one for 33 years now and will still shoot nickle sized groups at 40 yards just as it came out of the box. A Ruger 22-45 is a nice 1911 trainer, same grip and control locations. There is a Glock 22lr clone made by some company. Gatorjet Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 Forgot about the Glock look alike, ISSC M22. Very similar except has an exposed hammer rather than being striker fired. All the "big gun" remfire copies seem to be ammunition sensitive, and problems feeding. Real men go propless!
Gatorjet Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 OK, so I went ahead and bought one! Tried it out Friday, need to work on the accuracy a bit, but it functioned fine. Shot Mini-Mags, CCI Velocitors, and even Remington Golden Bullet cheapo bulk stuff without problems. Aguila Super Max Hyper Velocity was JUNK. Wouldn't pick up about every third round from the magazine. Very happy with the Walther. Now, the hook. You guys had me thinking about the Rough Rider for a while. On my way to the range at Little Indian Creek CA I stopped at Ruby's Guns in Sullivan. There it was, Special Edition Rough Rider, Both Cylinders, Civil War themes presentation cedar box, and a holster. At least $30 less than around here. I couldn't help myself!!! ( No pics of the holster. Black Cordura, modern looking. Not "Period" at all.) And it looks so cool with my Henry Golden Boy 22 Magnum Just call me a Rimfire Cowboy!!! All I need is a horse. Maybe I can get one from out in front of Wal-Mart! Real men go propless!
Gatorjet Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 After some tweaking I think I've got the Rough Rider shooting pretty good! 10 yds with the ammo as shown on the target. Center was 6 shots of each brand before shooting the smaller targets. Real men go propless!
