DD'sMC Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 This is not a . After experiencing first hand the success of my duck hunting fool of a husband I made the decision that it was time to get out and enjoy the bounty of ducks on Table Rock Lake with him. It was an early rise for me. After putting on 4 layers of underarmor, fleece, more fleece, and then some camo, we headed to our ecologically friendly blind on the shores of Table Rock Lake. It was very cold and crisp, and luckily the wind was calm. Just before daylight, (or for you duck hunters--"shootin time") we had a flock of geese and a flock of ducks buzz the blind. This got us excited. Once daylight broke, a couple of small groups of ducks whistled by but they were out of range. It was a slow duck morning, not a lot of ducks moving. Then without warning, two ducks locked up on DuckyDoty's left side and we both shot, I missed and Doty dropped them both. I'll be honest, I got cold feet. I got up from the blind to get some circulation going to warm things up and when I did, of course, a group of about eight Gadwalls locked up over head just long enough for DuckyDoty to tell me not to move, not seeing them I turned around to look, they saw me and dispersed. I decided to venture through the trees to the cove behind us to see if there were any ducks held up there. I flushed up a half a dozen mallards but they did not turn toward our blind. Making my way back to the blind, there were the eight Gadwalls swimming in the cove next to our blind. I slowly slipped back into my spot without spooking them. As I turned to prepare for a shot on them, DD said "out front!". A dozen Gadwalls were coming in close and the first two were locked up for a landing right smack dab on top of our closest decoys. Then I heard those two words I love to hear, "take 'em!". I focused on the second bird with her feet out in front, one shot, dropped like a rock! My first duck! I'm tellin you guys, get out and do some duck huntin til this weather gets right for fishin! It's a blast! We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. The two best times to go fishing? When it is raining and when it is not.
