Members tpierce Posted January 15, 2010 Members Posted January 15, 2010 What is your favorite jerkbait set up? Rod/reel: I prefer a spinning rod for casting and control with a fast tip. Line: This is where I'm unsure. I've been using 8-10lb test flouro (for sensitivity and clarity) but sometimes snap fish off on the hook set. I'm sure there's a flaw in the line but I'm leaning towards mono.
Fishrman Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 I use a 6'4" falcon cara, 4 power with an old green curado on 8lb. and 10lb. fluorolear.
Gavin Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 On the river...6' Medium Light spinning with a fast tip. 2000 series reel...spooled with 6lb Suffix Performance Braid in yellow, and a 10' leader of flouro or green mono in the 8lb range attached with a triple surgeons knot. The only time I break off the lure or leader is when snagged. I use 8lb green mono if the temps are below freezing. Cheers.
vacation Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 I'll find out tomorrow..I am going to fish the Indian Point area with my new g loomis rod and throw rouges all day!!!
troutgnat Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 One more here. I will be launching out of Indian Point myself and working between there and Kimberling depending on where I find some fish. I too plan on looking for jerkbait fish unless the fish tell me otherwise. I'm in a 06' white Toyota Tundra and a silver/burgandy 89' Ranger 374V........Feel free to say Hi...............Darren. Deeper running baits I go to my Casting rods 6'6" to 7'0 Med Rods or a crankbait rod works the best for snapping the line and allows me to get it down where I need it. Shallow and smaller baits of course I go over to my 6'6" Med Light Spinning rods this rod is made just for this, very light tip with a back bone of of a med heavy.. Neat rod.. Line of course is the New AbrasX by Seaguar in 8 to 10 pound test on spinning and up 14 on casting.. Seems to work out very well, when in the water it just disappears and this new line has stopped the line cut at the knot for me and also with dock cables and cedars scratching it all up.. Well that is my 2 cents worth everyone! Good Fishing Don Capt. getfished Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 I use a 6'6" medium with a moderate tip. The tip is probably slower than most guys use. I use 8lb fluoro. Because of the tip I always make sure the hooks are razor sharp and I use a gradual sweeping pull as opposed to crossing their eyes type of hookset. Works for me. http://www.tacklespecialty.com/
Tom Spence Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 My favorite jerkbait rod is an American Rodsmith Zell Roland topwater rod. 6'6" medium with fast tip. Its a great setup. The reel I have on it now is an Okuma baitcaster. Excellent rod for jerkbaits and of course topwater. steveearle Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 Casting: G Loomis IMX MBR 782 (6'6"M) Shimano Chronarch 50MG 8 lb. Maxima Mono Spinning: G Loomis GLX SJR 782 (6'6"M Spinning) Shimano Sensilite 1500MG (Magnesium Stradid-Japan (JDM version) 6 lb. Trilene 100% Fluor. If you are breaking line there is a problem. There should really be ZERO hookset....just lean into them and tighten the line (sometimes this is hard to avoid if the fish really takes off and startles you). 8lb. mono that is limp/semi-limp is perfect. With floruo I check the diameter. 6 lb Trilene is .010, whereas 8 lb. Seaguar is .009. Going up to a 10lb. line would not hurt alot once the water is in the upper 40's+ and you are working the bait faster and getting as deep is not as much of a concern. My set up is mostly for LOZ in 38-45 degree water.....
