Members jwarren Posted February 8, 2010 Members Posted February 8, 2010 I'm trying to decided among several models for use flyfishihng...marking spots, navigating unfamiliar areas, etc. Needs ability to download maps for when I go out west. What's everyone using and how do you like it? Garmin seems to be top choice, especially GPSMAP 76 or 60 version. What about Delorme PN series? THanks....
jeb Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 The Garmin 60CSX is a great unit. I've had one pretty much since the CSx model showed up. I have Topo 2008 loaded along with all of the USA in City Navigator. So it does street level prompting (with beeps, not voice) for on road navigation, too. It's really a nice unit, and Garmin has great customer service. I also have a Garmin eTrex Vista HCx loaded up with the same maps. Basically identical features and functions of the 60CSx, just in a smaller package with no antenna protruding. Fits easily in a pocket, where the 60 is a little big for that. The screen is slightly smaller too, and the buttons are on the side instead of the face. But both have high sensitivity antenna's, although using different technology for that. Both are outstanding for not loosing the signal, even in a backback and under a heavy leaf canopy. I don't think you go wrong with either. John B 08 Skeeter SL210, 225F Yamaha
jdmidwest Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 I use the Triton 400 with the outdoor pack. It includes the Topo Explorer Deluxe. You can download topos or aerials to the unit. I also use another software with it, Mapsend Topo for topo maps with roads and points of interest. Its small and uses AA batteries. You don't have to worry about a charger, just carry spare batteries that work with flashlights, radios, cameras, etc. The rechargable only units limit you as to how long you can use them away from electric. Members jwarren Posted February 9, 2010 Author Members Posted February 9, 2010 Thanks guys for the feeback. Jeb....if you only had one of the two, which would you buy? Which do you think is easier for a newbie to learn/use? Also,is there one specific software that does a good job showing river detail, such as where I fish in AR? thanks
jeb Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Tough call on which I'd buy today. It really depends on the application. I love the small footprint of the Vista for my dirt bike use and for hiking, etc. So on that alone, given your usage, that'd be the one I'd recommend. But it's a little harder to learn because of the buttons being on the side and not as clearly labeled as the 60's. So I'd say the 60 is easier to learn, even though they both have the same functions and will do the same things. The topo 2008 would be the one you'd want for streams and rivers. And it also shows a lot of road detail, although it won't give you street level nav. John B 08 Skeeter SL210, 225F Yamaha

I like what I read. How easy is it to learn and operate? What map packages would be good for fishing/hunting rivers in our area(AR mostly)? How much did you spend? Thanks.
