When its cold, do you guys have your weight farther or closer to the bait? or does it matter?

For me, it does not matter. I usually have about 18" between my hook and sinker all throughout the year.

Be sure not to limit yourself to a traditional dropshot tactic. Use the dropshot setup, and fish it like a Carolina rig too. We've done well at The Rock with that setup too.
