Members Capt. Hook Posted March 12, 2010 Members Posted March 12, 2010 Hey guys, I was thinking about heading down tomorrow and was wondering how the fishing has been. Also, how is the water looking? Is it worth my time, basically?
FlyFishinFool Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 I fished down at Bennett Spring Wed & Thur of this week (3/9-3/10). The water was running just a little above normal and just a little fast, but overall the water was pretty clear - not crystal clear like mid-summer, but you can still easily see the bottom in several feet of water. Wed morning it was a bluebird day, but it was overcast, breezy with an occassional spit of rain on Wed afternoon and all day on Thur. there were not many people fishing on Wed and even less on Thur - guess the weather chased them off. I caught over 30 fish on Wed and over 20 fish on Thur, so I had a good time fishing. I saw a couple of folks hit hot spots where they caught several fish over a short period of time, they were fishing one of the following: drifting a tri-color glo-ball, fishing a green copper-john, or stripping a brown wooley bugger. Personally I caught most of my fish dead-drifting a bead-head nymph. The faster current required using weighted flies and a longer than normal tippet in order to get it down near the bottom. Sorry for the late reply - hope this still is of some help. * ´¯`•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸ ><((((((º> `•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸ ><((((º> .¸¸.•´¯`•.¸ ><((((((º> I look in my fly box and think about what should guide my choice of the best fly: the amount/angle of sun on the water, the water temp & clarity, what bugs are hatching, what the fish might be eating, and what worked last time. Then I remember what an old man told me... " Ninety percent of what a trout eats is brown, fuzzy, about 1/2 inch long and underwater."
TroutRinger Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 I was there yesterday. Started below the dam and couldn't get anything consistent going. Went above the dam with green and dark green bead head wooly buggers and caught ten in about two hours. I didn't have sinking line so I let it sink for about 5-10 seconds then would strip it quickly a couple times and let it fall again. "Of all the liars among mankind, the fisherman is the most trustworthy." "There's a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore like an idiot."
