Stockton Lake Guide Service Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 Water temp at dam 38, up the rivers is around 47 Water level is .71 high Fishing was tough to say the least today. Talked with lots of people who said they were not doing very good. Few fish here and there, but no real pattern. The cold front and rain changed a few things, but it won't be long (a day or two) before its back to normal, at least until we get another front. I did get to fish with a 9 year old today that had more patience than most adults I've fished with. He fished all day in the cold and wind, and only complained (and less than I did) about the cold after he couldn't feel his feet anymore. Walleye are on the move. I have heard a few reports of fish up the rivers and creeks. We tried that today but didn't have much luck. The reports I have gotten have been from reliable sources, but they just didn't bite today. try throwing small jigs and jerkbaits up the rivers. The bite around the dam hasn't got going yet. The water is still pretty cold. The weather is supposed to be good thru sat. And then turn cold again with some snow. We really need the snow, haven't had any in days!! Crappie are still under some shad in the creeks, but this bite is almost done. I did have one big crappie on a jerkbait in the mouth of a creek. Most everyone that we talked to crappie fishing said they were catching small fish. Best bet for bigger crappie would be under the shad or in brush piles in 15 foot or less. Bass had been great thru the weekend, but were slower today. Most of the bass have been coming on tubes and jerkbaits. Your best bet is to throw the jerkbait until your arm falls off. This will give you the best chance of catching a big walleye and a big bass. Sorry I can't tell you more. I have been off the lake for a few days with a death in the family, and we didn't do as good as I hoped for today on a trip. Spring brings lots of surprises and along with the tough days comes those days that you can catch the fish of a lifetime. Tomorrow will be an entirely new day that could change everything. I have trips everyday this week (except tomorrow) and things will go better as the weather warms this week. I will try to post some updates as the week goes on. If anyone did good today, please let us know. I hate days like this, but it was still a great day on the lake. I am new to this forum and have been reading quite a bit, good info on here. and the report I just read held true to the letter for me and two of my fishing buddies yesterday, it was tough, must have caught a 100 small to extra small crappie. and went looking for walley and found none. thank you for the report.
straw hat Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 Good report. I can confirm your info on the crappie. I have been catching 25 +/- small ones to each keeper and most keepers around 13 or 14". Most of my better fish have been on bad weather days (cold, drizzle and windy). All 15' or less.
