fox_76 Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Hey guys, Gutted my boat this weekend and found that the foam below the floor is totally trashed,.. I don't even think it'll float. I had a guy that was camping next to me last summer tell me a story that he had used a few cans of that exandable foam to fill the bottom of is boat after replacing his floor. Is that a viable option or was he just full of "great idea's". I don't want to be one of those guys that the last thing he said was "watch this"!!! if this is not a good option,... does anyone know where to pick up some foam at a reasonable price? jdmidwest Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 I would go to the hardware store like Lowes and get some blue or pink Dow foam and a tube or 2 of liquid nail adhesive. I assume it is an Alum boat and you are trying to fill in the voids. Expanding foam would be permanent but not very good. fozzie. Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 I've gone the expanding foam route before- it works, but it's pretty expensive. Tom.
fox_76 Posted April 5, 2010 Author Posted April 5, 2010 It's fiberglass, Tri-Hull. older boat mid 70's Glastron. I'll also check into the Dow foam. Thanks guys for the advice! I didn't go to college,... I was too busy learning stuff. --Ted Nugent

Make sure the foam you use is "waterproof." There are a lot of foams out there that will not hold up to water and will not give any type of flotation. I would imagine an expandable poly-urethane foam should work pretty good. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.

I have seen articles on the www about using that pink foam for rebuilding boats. They used it in the floors of aluminum boats to add noise cancellation and bouyancy. Should work pretty good. taxidermist Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Dont waste your time with the stuff in spray . its not going to last. Call Ozarkwoods in Harrison AR and get some of the two part foam they sell. It is urethane and petroleum products will not harm it. mixes one part to one part and foams well. 1 870 743-6555 (In the Harrison, AR area) 1 800 467-0369 More than enough to fill your boat. A gallon kit is somewhere around 50 bucks.
Gilly Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 The Dead Animal Artist is correct about the 2-part. I couldn't remember what we used when we did our boat but here's a link my son sent me this morning. This is what we used..... http://www.mertons.com/Floatation/index.html www.drydock516.com
fox_76 Posted April 6, 2010 Author Posted April 6, 2010 "Dead animal Artist",.. now that's funny,.. anyway. Thanks I was wondering about the longevity of the spray stuff. Thanks again for all your guys help. I guess I'll start calling aroun and see if I can find that stuff sold locally (springfield area) Thanks again I didn't go to college,...
