Stockton Lake Guide Service Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 The lake are still about 4 foot high but the water has really started to warm. The water up the creeks is about 60 degrees and the water around the dam is about 50. The walleye is biting awesome, if you can get one to bite. Everyone that I talked to that caught one said they really hammered it. I don't know what that feels like because they won't bite me. If anyone would like to add to this report to help us all out, that would be great. I don't think I have heard of anyone that has got over 2 in one day, and that was on accident I think. Crappie are really biting though. Fish channel drops in 12-15 foot of water with jigs and minnows. If you find them you will catch them (that sounds deep) There are also a few fish on main lake brush, but the better bite are on the staging fish. mouth of small cuts, points, and channel drops are the places you need to focus. Bass are in the brush up the creeks and are hitting spinnerbaits and jigs. Sorry it's a short report, going to the lake. Good luck and I will do a longer detailed report later. Walleyedmike Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 Thanks for the report Bob. I'll be down this weekend, which will be the earliest in the year I've fished Stockton. What areas would you suggest to target walleye during the spring? I would assume the spawn is over? WM
Members kcbear Posted April 8, 2010 Members Posted April 8, 2010 Thanks for the report, Bob. Seems I can always count on you to provide the skinny. Will be on the lake Sunday afternoon, Monday, Tuesday, and if doing OK, Wednesday morn. I probably won't chase walleye, but my partner will be fishing for them. I intend to hit the creeks for bass and some of the channel breaks for crappie. Problem is I have only been fishing the lake for the last 8 or 9 months (last July), so spring fishing is still an unknown for me. Plan to start midlake, and work south from Hawker area. Sound reasonable?? Thanks again for your timely reports. KCBEAR
Stockton Lake Guide Service Posted April 9, 2010 Author Posted April 9, 2010 Thanks for the report Bob. I'll be down this weekend, which will be the earliest in the year I've fished Stockton. What areas would you suggest to target walleye during the spring? I would assume the spawn is over? WM I wish I knew if the spawn was over. I assume it is, but then again I'm not 100% sure if ever started. I am thinking they spawned out a little deeper or went up into the bushes and did it while I wasn't looking. The best bet on catching walleyes is throwing stickbaits on points around the dam or slow drifting a crawler rig or a minnow rig over the same points. I see lots of fish on my graph, but not having much luck getting them to bite me. If the spawn is over, the fish usually go to points and are pretty sluggish for a while. If this is happening, then you will need to fish them slow, but if they have been done for a week or so, then they will start chasing shad again, but then again, what do I know? I've had to eat crappie all spring so I'm just saying what they "should" be doing. Also, if you are planning on going up the creeks, then you can fish for crappie and "usually" end up with a walleye or two for dessert. No promises, but the ones up the creeks, at least the majority of them, are done spawning and will be shallower and thus a little more active. Sorry I can't help you a little more, but the lake is full of walleye so all we can do is try to get them to bite, and it's always fun trying!! Walleyedmike Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 Thanks Bob. If I have any luck I'll let you know. BTW nothing wrong with surviving off of crappie all spring. Heck, I went on a fishing trip one time that we had to eat bass or go hungry. Yuck! WM
