fozzie. Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 Hey folks, Thinking about heading down toward Poplar Bluff this weekend and fishing Tenmile Creek. Never done it before, was wondering about access. Is it an easily wadeable stream? Anything else I need to know before going down there? Thanks! Tom Tom.
jdmidwest Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 We have always dumped a canoe in at TT and paddled up and down. It is a good little stream and holds some nice fish but access is very limited. Most landowners in Butler Cty have choked off all access to streams and County roads have no parking. Luckily, I have friends in PB that will shuttle, we just dump in and call for a pickup when done. Wading is limited, the TT access has some deep holes with mud banks for the most part, which is why we use a canoe. You might look at Cane Creek, or Little Black for wading also. E Green Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 This is the info I have been looking for regarding Cane and 10 Mile Creeks. I live right up the road from 10 mile/TT crossing in foxwood Point right off of TT. I was hoping I could walk down to the water from the TT Bridge and shore/wade fish but it sounds like this is a bad idea.....very very bummed about that.... Cane Creek has an access point on PP which is also very close to my home. Have you every fished that stretch of the creek?
jdmidwest Posted September 9, 2011 Posted September 9, 2011 There are several accesses that have been replaced in the past few years with High County bridges and blocked accesses. There are several places along various county roads in the area to access it. I think there is a spot below PP to park and get in. I have not been there in about 4 years. Little Black has access at Muddpuppy CA and above at K bridge. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
E Green Posted September 9, 2011 Posted September 9, 2011 I am going to try and get to the Cane Creek access area at the PP bridge this weekend. It looks so shallow from the bridge but maybe I can walk along the bank and find a deeper pool with some fish. I still hope to find an access point on 10 mile where I can shore/wade fish. Once I get my solo canoe next spring, I plan on dropping it in at the TT bridge like you mentioned earlier and just paddle it up and down as far as I can go. I have been driving to Doniphan and Van Buren every weekend this summer to wade fish the Current. It has been so much fun...love that river. Last weekend I caught 22 fish on two short trips. Most were just sunnies, some goggle eye and a few smallmouth....all were small but I'm completely new to all of this and I just love getting out and exploring. the fish are a bonus....maybe i'll pull in a big one this weekend.... I am about to go try out a place off of bus 60 in poplar bluff called Sun Stephens Cons. Area. I think it is a couple acre pond off of a dirt county road but I think you can hike about 3/4 of a mile to the black river as well. thanks for all the info...i love this region. By the way, does the fishing (what I'm doing; shore/wade with topwater rapallas and crankbaits, some rubber worms and plastics, etc)stay pretty good into Nov or is all of this fun about to end very soon?
jdmidwest Posted September 10, 2011 Posted September 10, 2011 For the most part, the best part ends when the water temps drop below 50. But a good warm sunny day can bring out some action. From where you are at, you can drive north and fish the St. Francois, Big Creek area at Sam A Baker in about the same time it takes to get to Doniphan. Of course, you can be in Eminence in a short while also and fish the Jack's Fork. Grab a Missouri Gazateer from Delorme and look at all of the little blue squigglies in the area, most any of them hold some good creek wading. You just have to watch your accesses and enter from public areas or gain permission. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson

Delorme's Missouri Gazetteer is invaluable. Never leaves my vehicle. I'm convinced you could drop a 50ft stretch of gravel, and they would show it on the map the following year. Regarding the temps, I can tell you my best day of smallie fishing came during the first weekend of November a few years ago. Just get used to monitoring the water temps/air temps/river level. If you can catch the right combination in late Fall, you can walk into a feeding frenzy. For instance, a rather wet October might have them duck and cover for a while, but a subsequent warm-up and declining river level often brings them out to play "catch-up". Sounds like you're finding some good places. Have you considered the drive over to the Eleven Point? Probably about 1hr 45min for you....maybe a bit less. The stretch from Cane Bluff to Greer can be very productive. Doesn't get much pressure, since most folks prefer to put in at Greer. Good luck on the solo canoe purchase. My buddy has a Mad River Legend (15ft)...absolutely loves it. I know he's done some cool things to customize it for fishing, too. Cheers!
