ozark trout fisher Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 I was thinking about a wading trip this weekend up around Mill Rock. Does anyone know what the water conditions are like, mainly, do you think it's clear enough to fly fish?
bikehikefish Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 The guage says 2.13 ft, which is about a foot higher than I like to fish it. Seems like all it has to do is look like it's going to rain, and the Bourbeuse rises and gets muddy. Wading near the Mill Rock access is limited - you can't go very far until you get to water too deep to wade. You are better off with a kayak, canoe, or small john boat. I haven't tried to fly fish it, but there is no reason that wouldn't work (when the water is in good shape). Wooly buggers, deer hair poppers, or anything that resembles a minnow could produce.

Thanks, I know what you mean about the Bourbeuse. If someone turns on a garden hose anywhere in the watershed, it becomes muddy and unfishable. I've spent some time wading at Mill Rock... I realize it's not perfect for wading, but I do know of a few spots around that are usually good for a smallie or two. I just hope it drops in time.
eric1978 Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 It didn't really look that bad when we crossed over it on 44 last Friday. I'd say it's definitely fishable up by MR, although maybe not so wadable. There are a couple neat spots a mile or so down from that access. I prefer to float the Bourbeuse though...there's just too much unproductive water to get through.

I just don't quite have the time this weekend for a float, but I might take along the canoe and paddle up to more productive water-that's the one good thing about slow rivers like the Bourbeuse-you can paddle upstream if you want.
