Quillback Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 Spots won today, it has me mystified, biting like crazy yesterday, but today was a struggle. I did catch some in a cove mouth on the main lake near the dam, they were out in 50 ft of water chasing shad on top, if I could get to them while they were on top, they were al over the wake bait, but if I got there too late, nothing. Caught about 6 or so chasing them around, best one about 15". I also caught this nice 19' smallmouth working the banks and picked up a couple of his smaller brethren on a wake bait. This dude really smashed it and fought the good fight I used a Lucky Craft wake bait today, the Rick Clunn variety that is a BP exclusive. Nice wake bait, casts better that a Redfin, runs true out of the box and comes with good hooks, and a feathered tail. Only drawback is price - $15.99 Yowch!
fishinSWMO Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 I agree those rc wake baits are great. I had one and caught the heck out of them till I broke off on the hook set on ft. gibson. Dang 10lb fluorocarbon. I keep waiting for them to go back on sale at 10 bucks a pop, but I dont think it is going to happen. Jeremy Dodson
Quillback Posted May 3, 2010 Author Posted May 3, 2010 $10 a piece would be good, I'd pick some up at that price too.
RSBreth Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 I've used that same color RC Wakebait for river Smallmouths, too. It's a great lure, even at 15-bucks a pop.
jeb Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 Yeah, the prices on some crank baits is getting ridiculous. I'd guess all of the makers will see companies like LC and Spro doing that and all raise their prices to match. Thanks for the report, Jeff. It's killing me not going fishing right now, but I'm my own worst enemy scheduling my scuba classes during the spawn. I'll be back on the water Weds afternoon, though. Hope they'll wait for me. Quillback Posted May 4, 2010 Author Posted May 4, 2010 Went out briefly this morning, fished for about 3 hours, picked up a few spots and one small hybrid on the wake bait. This spot almost was 17". I think I might buy some crawlers and see if I can catch a walleye tomorrow. John, once your scuba qualified, I have a whole list of places underwater I'd like you to check out Are you going to get an underwater camera?
jeb Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 I'll be qualified by 10am tomorrow. First open water dive at the dam today went like clockwork. I'm taking private lessons to get through this process FAST. Will take 3 days total, but only because you can't do all the open water dives on one day, per the certification organization. Otherwise, it would've only taken two. No camera, though. I might try to find a waterproof box for one of my digi cams, though. John B 08 Skeeter SL210, 225F Yamaha

I hit 3 nice Wallye throwing jigs in the rocks around point 5 Monday. The spots were non stop by just dropping a 4in worm on a drop shot about 10ft under the boat in 20ft of water. I have never "tried" to catch walleye but they are fun when you are not fishing for a check.
