troutfiend1985 Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 I just thought I would see if any one would like to start up a poll on their favorite flies. Seems that there are so many now days that a newbie might want a little help on their selection. I tried to include the major flies that I know of. I know that I put the wooly bugger in the nymph category and that a wooly bugger really isn't a nymph, but I'm not trying to create too many categories. I'm also not trying to get people to share the "secret fly." I have a couple of my own that work almost everytime I go and I don't feel the need to share them as I made them up myself. Just thought this would be fun. Tight lines. “The greatest menace to freedom is an inert people” J. Brandeis

Geoff Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 One of my favorite flies of all time is the Royal Wulff. If nothing else for just how it looks and addly enough i have only ever caught 1 single fish on one. OUtside of that anything thats a dry is pretty much my fav. i dont fish nymphs, but i will throw big streamers, woolies, mohairs etc etc. Plus there are all those warmwater flies i love to fish, and then classic full dress atlantic salmon are my favorite to tie. Flysmallie Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 You didn't list any smallmouth flies. I agree with that. Put a gurgler on there and I'm done.
flytyer57 Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 I agree with that. Put a gurgler on there and I'm done. Amen. Best smallmouth fly ever invented. Although a black woolybugger is good too. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
ozark trout fisher Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 I like general fly patterns. For me it's the Elk Hair Caddis for dries, and the woolly (preferably with a light brown body and a dark brown marabou tail, a nearly perfect crayfish imitation) for nymphs/streamers. If I could pick a second for the nymph/streamer section, I would have to throw in the Hare's Ear. It's my go to fly on a lot of the trout rivers around here. Another favorite is a little creation of mine with a peacock herl body and a bright yellow marabou tail, tied on a #14 or #16 nymph hook. I love it for bluegill, crappie, and small bass, but I've also done well with it down on the Current.
troutfiend1985 Posted May 10, 2010 Author Posted May 10, 2010 I agree with that. Put a gurgler on there and I'm done. I know, the forum is not really for smallmouth bass flies though. Maybe I'll start another topic on bass flies, but the list was already long enough and "other" is always an option. I should have qualified that these are trout flies and not bass flies, so I am sorry for the confusion. Flytyer, you probably know more about smallmouth flies than I would ever know, never been for smallmouth. I need to one day, but if I have to drive 2 and half hours, then I'm going for trout . ozark trout fisher Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 You did list one bass fly. The Woolly Bugger. There are plenty of other flies that are worth having, but I'm of the opinion that a Woolly Bugger is about all you really need the majority of the time... There are lots of times when other flies work better, but there aren't many instances where you can't catch a few on a woolly of some size or color. Bass, trout, bluegill, goggle-eye, even catfish, they work for just about anything. I feel strongly enough about it that I carry one big fly box with nothing but woollies of various sizes and colors, and then one smaller box with everything else.

Tight Lines. You gotta drive 2 1/2 hours to a smallmouth stream? Glad I'm not in your shoes. But actually, smallies are in more waters than trout. Smallies are sometimes even found in trout waters. Just put the size 20's away and break out the 2/0's. Well, ya probably only have to go up to a 6 or so depending on what type of fly it is and what size fish ya wanna catch.
