Predator1 Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 I had a great time on crappie last weekend. Are they still biting in the shallows?
Members paintnfurdoe Posted May 8, 2010 Members Posted May 8, 2010 Yes they are...had two limits yesterday(thursday)
MstStudent10 Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 That would be a YES. Get this I was bass fishing today in Maze Creek, throughout the morning I landed 4 "Big Ol" slabs, on a 3/8 oz War Eagle Spinnerbait. It was nuts, I've never had crappie nail a full size bass spinnerbait before. Had a couple other hits that "nipped" at my spinnerbait that I didn't think were bass, looking back I bet those were crappie too that didn't hook up. I can't imagine the luck we would've had if we were actually crappie fishing those areas with small crappie jigs or minnows. We fished in the back 1/2 of maze creek and those crappie were pretty close up on the shore when they hooked the spinnerbait. On another note...had 2 keeper walleye on finesse worms and 50+ bass between me and my dad with 8 keepers. Spinnerbait, Jigs, and finesse worms, and then switched to carolina rigging centipedes on shallow gravel points once the sun came out. Great day. Set the hook first, ask questions later...
Predator1 Posted May 8, 2010 Author Posted May 8, 2010 Thanks for the report. I am hitting Stockton tomorrow. You guys are definitely appreciated. I see Maze Creek on the Map. Do you get to it from Cedar Ridge Boat Ramp or is there a primitive boat ramp off HWY 245. MstStudent10 Also, great to here you get to fish with your Dad. I used to fish with my dad and hunt with my dad up until I turned 21 when he pasted away from Cancer. Cherish those moments and when you get older like me...return that to your kids, nephew, neices. God Bless, Good Luck and Safe Fishing. Charles
MstStudent10 Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 When I fish Maze creek I'll either put in at Masters, Cedar Ridge, or State Park. Just depends on any other areas I'd like to try along the way. Masters ramp is the closest to Maze, only thing is that it is across the main lake, so if your in a smaller boat you may not want to attempt that. Cedar Ridge is the next closest and is where we put in because it was supposed to be a windy day. There's also some decent fishing right around that ramp. I caught a bass on topwater from the ramp before we even put the boat in! On another note, there is a gravel road leading down to the lake in the back of Maze next to the bridge. The road goes into the lake so I figure you could put in there possibly? Don't take my word on it though I am not sure. I would only attempt it too if I had a SMALL light boat and a high sitting truck. Anyone else know if you can put in there? Set the hook first, ask questions later...
straw hat Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 Been there many times. Launch is very shallow and most boats I have seen launched there are small jon boats that can be slid off and on the trailer.
Predator1 Posted May 9, 2010 Author Posted May 9, 2010 Thanks, We fished fellows today from 11:00am-5pm...real windy...kept 10 Big Blue Gill and 3 channel cats around 4lb each. Seen thousands of beds just not many fish in the shallows today. I have launched my 15' jon boat on a dilly trailer with my Chevy Colorado Truck down at Taylors bridge on the Little Sac. Are we talking about the same time of launching?

Are we talking about the same time of launching? Yea, you should be able to make it with that rig. There are two old roads to launch from. Both are on the west side of the bridge. Use the one on the north side of the road. The one on the south side was just recently used by the utility company to put in some pipelines and you will sink in up to your axle real easy.
Hunter91 Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Had 12 nice keeper crappie today out of about 30 or so we caught near Ruark bluff. The better ones seem to be about 20ft deep. Most still had eggs also.
Predator1 Posted May 11, 2010 Author Posted May 11, 2010 I wonder if this cold front is pushing them deeper. If so maybe they will move back shallow. Looks like rough weather this week. I bet not too many boats will be out.
