I will be heading down to Crooked Creek next week (long way from Seattle) and was wondering if the spawn is over. I know it may seem like a dumb question but the climate zone here is dictating that the spawn is still strong here. I definitely dont want to be cranking them off their beds.

As of two weeks ago, the spawn had not started. Fish were moving, but no visible nests. Havent been up there since, so it could have slammed through. I am afraid with the cooler nights it will be sporatic, so you may find fish at different stages.

Just don't target fish on beds and you'll have a clear conscience. You can't hang up the rods all spring lest you'll catch a spawner.

Thanks for the input y'all. I definitely wont be targeting any bedding fish but like Eric stated once in a while you are going to get one. I'll make sure to quick release all of them so they can go about their business.

eric1978, I just want to say that I admire how much you care about smallmouths. It reminds me of how I feel about trout.

Interesting. The spawn on the Meramec was in full swing the last week of April. Doubt it's still continuing on Meramec, but the next full moon could see a few more laying.

Like Eric said, you just have to be conscientious about where you cast. If you cast to likely bedding areas, you may hook a spawner. Avoid fishing in those areas and concentrate on pre and post spawn habitat and you should be fine.
