bferg Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 Business end of a 3 lb smallie I caught last week on a topwater. Nice pic! I was hoping to chase some smallies this weekend....I have never really looked for smallies at Beaver- any pointers one which part of the lake or structure to target this time of year. I have a few spots in mind from my Fishing HotSpots map...but any pointers would be great...
Zack Hoyt Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 Just rigged up a new 6wt for such fun. Need to get the boat out there. Zack Hoyt OAF Contributor Flies, Lies, and Other Diversions
Quillback Posted May 24, 2010 Author Posted May 24, 2010 Hey bferg, there always seem to be a few around the Honey Cove area which is south of the dam, if you can get there at dawn on a calm morning you should see fish busting shad, at least they have been doing it the last few weeks and hopefully will continue for a while. Surprsingly the smallies will be out there in the deep water with the Spots. There's also stripers, whites and hybrids busting shad there early in the AM. After the top water bite ends, I guess you should work the banks and points with C-rigs and jigs, but that did not work for me last time I was out.
bferg Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Thanks Q. I will try to give it a shot this weekend if I can find someone to go with. I normally stay around Rocky Branch but I need to branch out a bit. Appreciate it!
Members spahog Posted May 25, 2010 Members Posted May 25, 2010 Nice fish Quill. bferg - I am by no means a smallmouth expert, but I have still been catching a bunch of them on pea gravel points swimming a grub. More shorts than keepers but still a lot of fun. It seems like all the areas that are producing smallmouth right now are also holding walleye. I've hooked several "monster smallmouth" that ended up being walleye by the time they got to the boat.
bferg Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 Thanks S. I never give the grub enough love! With a box full of expensive lures it is easy to overlook one of the most reliable ever!
Stump bumper Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 Thanks S. I never give the grub enough love! With a box full of expensive lures it is easy to overlook one of the most reliable ever! The single tail silver, hula grub, twin tail on a shacky head with so many colors and ways to fish them.
Members spahog Posted May 26, 2010 Members Posted May 26, 2010 Stump - You need to make it out to fish the Wednesday nighter tonight.
Stump bumper Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 Stump - You need to make it out to fish the Wednesday nighter tonight. Went out early today to check out a prop and got hot really quick, tried a few spots got two keeper blacks but total was around 5 lbs so I decided to save the money. Didn't run much out of Prarie Creek area, might have been better farther North but the sun had me drained.
