WASHBURN, Mo. (AP) - Barry County officials say several hundred dead chickens were dumped into a creek in southwest Missouri.

Barry County Sheriff Mick Epperly says the chickens were found May 30 in Flat Creek northeast of Washburn. Officials believe the

animals were dumped from a bridge on May 29.

The Joplin Globe reports that Epperly says there were hundreds of chickens in the creek.

He says it took a clean-up crew from a nearby processing plant hours to remove the chickens from the water.

Officials from Barry County and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources are investigating.

I suppose somebody's Chickens got to hot and died so they just figured what the heck throw them in the creek. People should be fined thousands for this stuff.

Near Stubblefield access?? Used to wade the stretch upstream from there, beautiful river. Hope they catch the creeps.

Here is more information from the Joplin Globe. I haven't looked at a map, so I'm not sure where they are talking about. It is a great little river but it really struggles with the way that it's treated sometimes.

Dead chickens pulled from creek

WASHBURN, Mo. — Authorities are investigating the illegal dumping of several hundred dead chickens in Flat Creek northeast of Washburn.

Mick Epperly, sheriff of Barry County, said the county and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources are investigating.

The chickens were dumped at a bridge on Rarm Road No. 1085, south of Farm Road No. 2212, Epperly said.

“There were hundreds of them. Dumping into a creek bed is definitely a no-no,’’ he said.

Epperly said the incident probably occurred on May 29. It was discovered by a Washburn resident on May 30.

Epperly said Dave Compton, emergency management coordinator for Barry County, was notified. Compton contacted the clean-up crew with George’s poultry, which has a processing plant near Cassville.

“They were out that weekend. It was a matter of hours before they got it all cleaned up,’’ Epperly said. “They started the cleanup as soon as the phone calls were made.’’

Epperly said George’s is working to determine from whose farm the chickens came.

“It’s a matter of determining which grower will come up short on their count,’’ he said.

Washburn is located south of Cassville on 37 Hwy. The head waters of Flat creek start in this area. There is a spring bubbling out of a cave on the west side of the hiway that has the first sustainable water source for the creek.

Sounds like paradise for the resident snapping turtles and crawdads.

I am familiar with this part of the Flat Creek and if you will notice the Sheriff said Creek "Bed".

There is no water there right now, and probably never is except after a rain event. The birds were found piled up under a small bridge. I went out there and found the spot, and I would describe it as a dry ditch. I would never have guessed it as being "Flat Creek". I had to look real hard to find a few feathers and be sure I was in the right spot, so I would say environmental damage was right at zero. I got a feeling they were pretty small birds as well.

Not to make excuses for the offenders because what they did was dead wrong and hopefully they will get their short hairs in the wringer. But don't get the impression they were dumped into an actual stream with fish and such. At this point in the "Creek" it's pretty much a dry ditch or gully.

Offenders were obviously idiots, lots better places they could have picked and not had them within sight of a public road. The whole thing would not even be an issue if they tossed them out in the adjacent pasture 100 yards away. They opened a can of worms by dumping them in a "waterway", such as it is.

It is a reminder to me to take pictures painted by the media with a grain of salt. I had pictured a small mountain of soggy birds floating in the water. But it looks to me like it was probably a couple trash bags of smallish birds in a ditch.

Slow news days lead to this type of reporting.
