I put in at Roark Bluff last night around 6:30 and fished until 10:00. There were 3 of us in the boat and we were just bass fishing. We mainly fished the bank across from the swimming beach with plastic worms. The bass were biting really well in that little cove, but nothing with much size. We caught about 20 bass, but all were short. I had a few that were shorter than the worms they were hitting (guess they were hungry). The wind picked back up pretty good and made it tough to fish anywhere.

I am heading back up there tomorrow morning (early) to try and find some topwater fish. Anybody have any suggestions as to where we may find some?

Thanks. That's kinda what I was thinking. My brother n law who owns the boat is a pansy when it comes to any wind at all. His V-bottom boat doesn't do too well, but I guess we will have to try it anyway.

I know when I went out this morning, the bass were just pounding my weightless white fluke (insert joke here). I was ripping it and letting it flutter down slowly just barely under the surface. Now I'm no marine biologist, but if I didn't know any better I'd say that's a sign the topwater bite is about to turn on.

I am kind of new to Stockton, are you guys catching your bass on the banks or fishing for them deep "Table Rock style?"

So far, I have been catching most of my better bass on points in about 15-20 fow fishing smoke grubs on a 1/4 ounce head on clay or gravel or a jig and pig on chunk rock bottom, but am wondering if I am missing some good opportunities in the bushes and laydowns along the banks. Any ideas?

Early Summer (right now) is a really good time to be fishing bushes. Usually lakes are high from Spring rains, and the sun is hot, which means that shallow fish will relate heavily to cover. Another good tip is to fish in some of the creeks because they usually have some dirtier water, which means the bass are even more likely to hold close to cover. If I was tournament fishing Stockton right now I would most definitely look to Flipping Bushes, keying in on areas resembling the conditions above. Good Luck.

Set the hook first, ask questions later...

I have been catching numbers up shallow in the brush, but all of my bigger (than 3#) fish have come 10+ feet. Just food for thought. Personally, I'd rather catch 20 little guys than 2 or 3 hogs, but thats just me.

What are you guys throwing into those shallow bushes? I have been using a 7 in power worm in blue fleck the few times I have gone shallow, with fair success. I have also thought about using a sinko or fluke.

Most of the deeper fish have been hitting the jig and pig well in pb&j. We have also caught a lot of real nice bass while fishing nightcrawlers on 1/4 jig heads for walleye. Thanks MoStStudent and Bolivar Basser for your insight, hopefully I can find some solid patterns and help you guys out soon!

Any soft plastic is good, worms, brush hogs, creatures, craws. Jig n pig works well for me as well, I've always got one tied on.

I've been using the jighead/nightcrawler for walleyes too, but I seem to be catching more drum than anything. Anything special about where you're catching these wallys? Depth, points, etc.?

I got up there at Roark Bluff about 2:30 am Saturday and did a little bit of night fishing before trying out the topwater bite. We fished the band just northeast of the H hwy bridge and caught several small bass. Once the sun began coming up we started throwing buzzbaits and zarra spooks and had absolutely no luck at all. Went back to worm fishing and started tearing them up again, but all small ones. I found one point where we were sitting about 20 feet from the bank but in 50 ft of water and caught about 20-25 bass myself. We had a few tournament fishermen come up on us ans try to get us to move but it didn't work. We just kept catching them and the guys finally got mad and left. Fished till about 11:00am and between 3 of us probably landed about 50 bass, but only 1 keeper. Great day, but I need to find the bigger ones now.
