Stump bumper Posted June 22, 2010 Posted June 22, 2010 Lauched out of Prarie Creek around 7pm and I still had wake boats getting into the water and ski boats tied up along the ramp blocking people from launching. Finnally got in and ran to coose where I found water skiers and people just running wake boats in cicles so I ran up to Ventris. Surface temp was 88 degrees, light green stain with visibilty of about 10ft and little wind in the cove. Had a lot of short spots on a twin tail grub around the rocks then about sundown the top water bite came on, I had never seen the spots boil the water in so many places. It was a good spot on every cast, I was throwing a red fin and never got it back to the boat without a fish. Then I was unhooking a good 2lb spot when I got the middle hook from the redfin in my middle finger all the way up to the hook bend, with the fish still on the first hook. I finnaly got the fish off, the split ring off the hook and drove the boat back to the ramp. Back at prarie creek there were still 3 boats just doing circles to see how much wake they could throw into the Marinia. I could not stand to bend down the hook at all to do the bend and snatch hook removal, so I loaded the boat and headed to the ER. Sorry I can't report on the bite after dark.
Members Kenny Hulse Posted June 22, 2010 Members Posted June 22, 2010 John, sorry to hear about your finger. Hope it heals sooon, I can imagine the throbbing. Good to hear the fishing was fun though. I believe I'm going to head to the Rock early Sat. morning, it gives my confidence a boost from fishing Beaver all year.
J-Doc Posted June 22, 2010 Posted June 22, 2010 Nice report. Tough luck on the hook though. I had a hook do that to me one time but it wasn’t nearly as big as the Redfin hook. I told my partner to stomp on my foot pretty hard a few times while I pulled the hook out with a pair of pliers. Wrapped a band-aid on it and kept on fishing. My partner said, “why don’t you push it through and cut the barb off?” I said, “No way am I going to waste a good treble hook!” (hahaha) With him stomping on my foot, it helped take the pain off of my finger. He still thinks I’m nuts for that. Maybe I am. Ventris. I like that area. At certain times of year, it holds a good group of fish. Nice to hear the spots were schooling. The whites are just about full bore all over the lake but not quite there yet. I hear ya on the wake boats. Any goof-ball with enough money will buy a new boat and hit the lake. Not knowing anything about boating safety, etiquette, or concern for fellow boaters. If you are the one to breakdown, they won’t help. But if they breakdown, they shoot flares and blow horns at you expecting help. And don’t get me started on loading and unloading. It’s horrible. They drive up to the docks full bore or they turnaround in the Rocky Branch cove while trying to load or unload and make 3-4ft wakes which is impossible to tie a boat much less load it on a trailer. Stump bumper Posted June 22, 2010 Author Posted June 22, 2010 I can snatch a hook out of someone else pretty good but couldn't do it to myself. I stoped two guys in a nitro and asked for help, they knew what to do but didn't have the nerve to pull it out. I know what you mean about the Rock, sure helps when you can put together a 15lb bag once in a while.
Quillback Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 Soory to hear about that hook, that's the worst thing is getting a hook in you with a fish still on the lure. Good to hear the fish are still biting, I have not been out to Beaver in a cuople of weeks.
rps Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 Go to my blog and read my fish hook story. Two versions - one is the actual post I put on this board. The other is a rewrite for future inclusion in my soon to be famous collection of short stories. When I say I feel for you, I really mean it.
jeb Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 A buddy was down from MN this spring and I had him fishing up in Ventris with suspending crankbaits. He did the same thing, running a hook into his finger with a fish still on the lure. I got the lure stabilized first and got the fish off. In our case, the hook had gone all the way through. So it was an easy fix. I clipped off the end of the hook, he pulled it back through, put a bandaid on and went back to fishing. So to hear yours needed a visit to the ER.
