rcguy Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Anyone have one of these? I'm looking for a nice fast action rod. Opinions welcome.
Zach Bearden Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 I'm not sure of your budget but a Z-Axis is pretty sweet. I know many people like the flights too. Haven't ever had any experience with one. rcguy Posted July 13, 2010 Author Posted July 13, 2010 Picked up a 5 wt. Flight last night and fished it with some 5 wt sharkskin in the pond last night. It is indeed a fast rod. Shoots line like a rocket. Long casts are pretty effortless.... but then again I have been throwing an LST 2 wt! The Flight a beautiful casting rod and I like it!! You can really feel it load.
vanven Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 The Flight is a good rod. You get a lot of the Sage expertise and experience without the steep price tag. Lamson tends to be very similar in their reels. They tend to use the same drag in a $130 reel that they use in a $400 reel. -Jerod
rcguy Posted July 16, 2010 Author Posted July 16, 2010 One thing I have noticed after looking at several Sage rods the past week is that the cork quality can be great or not-so-great on any price rod. My Flight is fantastic, my Vantage is mediocre, and the Zaxis I threw was really mediocre. I would have been very dissappointed for 650 bucks!!! I got lucky on my FLight. I was told by the salesman that it has been crap shoot with Sage for handle quality. Anyway, something to look for if you want good cork for the money.
Cocry Posted September 2, 2010 Posted September 2, 2010 I picked up a flight in June while I was down at Taney. I absolutely love it. We have 2 older st. croix rods that my parents use and I ended up letting my mom use my flight for an hour or so. The weight difference was actually obnoxious and I made her give it back. I unfortunately didn't know about the cork quality problem but I'm completely content with mine. Love the darn thing actually
Greg Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 Has Sage ever made a bad rod? I've liked every one I've ever picked up. I generally don't like fast action rods that well but the Z axis is the exception. It's just exceptionally smooth and sweet. Believe it or not my favorite Sage is a 5 wt Launch I have. Greg I have a zAxis in a 5wt. I love it almost as much as my dog. I have been shopping for a 4wt, but having yard cast several contenders I can not justify not using my Z. I am now looking at a 7wt for nights on Taney in the fall and chasing carp in the KC area. I am really leaning towards a new Flight since it is going to be a rod that gets less use than my 5 wt. -Jerod

Sounds like you already made your mind up . I have an older Sage 9' 4wt DT series I believe, that is my primary and a Sage Launch 9' 6wt when I throw bigger things that the 4wt can't handle. Also have a 8' Browning 3wt that I use in the daytime at Taney and for perch in the ponds and a 8'6" Heddon 8wt for saltwater. Too many rods too many decisions sometimes, also have some spare 5,6& 7 wts for friends to use. I have started giving my son's friends rods after I get them addicted to flyfishing. F2F
strangercreek Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 likewise on the Launch. I have an 8 Wt that I used the flats around Cocoa Beach this weekend and it was windy, casted nicely...not as mushy as some people make the rod out to be. I don't understand the problem with the color either.
