stinger160
It looks like we've rescheduled our trip to late August. Any recommendations on flies, methods etc.? We were going to go in late May and I stocked up on rubber leg nymphs, 3x leaders and lots of lead based on the recommendations from this forum (thanks again!). Is it very different in August? Gavin
Water will probably be low, and I'm not sure how much snot moss is in the river this year.....Fish early or late, and bring some smaller flies and lighter tippet, and be prepared to clean your flies off often. Cheers.
Randall
I stuck with 4 and 5X tippet on my nymph set-ups both times I've fished there and was fine. I've done well running a prince dropper below the stonefly. Have plenty of shot too; some of the riffles are pretty deep and fast. If you like to streamer fish, there are lots of good places to pound the banks. Cute animals taste better.
Justin Spencer
Late August bring some hoppers, I'd fish the lower end and you should find some browns that will cooperate. Had one gentleman catch a 19" brown yesterday right here at the campground on some crazy hopper looking imitation. You'll also pick up some smallmouth on that float. stinger160
Thanks everyone. I hope they're hitting the grasshoppers that would be fun. I'll post report when I get back.
Chris Gates
I like Thingamabobbers, 9 to 12 foot leaders ending in 3X fluorocarbon to the heavy stonefly or possibly leach pattern. Then I drop a small fly off the back with 4X. No reason to go smaller as long as your using fluoro. The water can be low in Aug. Obviously during the week is better then the weekend in terms of traffic.
stinger160
Well, we made it to the river this weekend. Pretty tough overall, caught a few small fish. One of the guys with us caught one about 16 inches late in the morning our last day. Not too many people on the water so that was a plus. Nothing on top to speak of. We mostly tried to stay deep with stonefly nymphs with droppers. Tried a variety on the dropper, none seemed to get much attention. I know now that I need to really work on my casting, pitching a double fly rig with weight is a challenge!
Justin Spencer
Fished a couple times over the last few days, they are absolutely wearing out princes, hare's ear and pheasant tails about a size 14-16. Using a weighed yellow rubber legs with the smaller nymph dropped off of it. The rubber legs is heavy enough to get it down and I think it is attracting them as well. Caught a few on the rubber legs but most on the other nymph. Didn't catch any dropped off of a brown rubberlegs which makes me think the yellow gets their attn. then they grab the smaller fly. Mostly 11-13" bows, lost two fair sized browns today, caught probably 10+ bows in 2 hours in the 100yd. strech below fantasy island. 3X flouro to main fly 4X to dropper, 1/2" thingamabobber about 6 feet. up.
