Kayser Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 http://www.state-journal.com/news/article/4810880 The article states that Kentucky has launched a program to increase marketability of these invasive fish, and that New Orleans fishermen call them "silverfin." Apparently they taste like shellfish (scallop and crab), so would you be willing to try it? Rob WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.

Al Agnew Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 Silverfin sounds good. Asian carp...forget it. Kentucky tuna...way too obviously a euphemism for something that probably isn't very good. Not sure there is much history of Kentucky producing gourmet food. There was a restaurant near where I live that advertised "fresh Alaskan walleye". Not sure what the fish really was, since there are no walleye in Alaska. But "Alaska" sounded like a place where good fish would come from. Kentucky doesn't, even though those of us who fish and know anything about Kentucky know that there are some good tasting fish in that state.
Flysmallie Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 Carp? Nope. Kentucky Tuna??? Now that just sounds like you are getting some slop. Silverfin? Well it least it has a name that sounds good. Â Â
Flysmallie Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 You left out "None" on your poll. That's where you just don't respond. Â Â
T-RockJaws Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 I am going with the "just don't respond method"... None of the three sound all that appealling to me. Think I will stick with Walleye and Crappie...
Paola Cat Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 Before we know it they'll be making fish sticks out of them and serving them up in school lunch programs. Cheers. PC
Bill B. Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 Before we know it they'll be making fish sticks out of them and serving them up in school lunch programs. That might not be a bad idea. Asian carp would be an inexpensive, renewable source of high-quality protein. We could can them and give them away as part of the commodities program.
vanven Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 As a dedicated and almost fanatical catch and release fisherman these fish make me want to take up bow fishing. No way I would eat them, I would rather contribute to the local raccoon population by leaving them on the bank. I would even consider dusting off the AK-47 for some 7.62 fishing for these guys. Although I live in KC, I don't fish the KC area. I am not sure where they are an issue here. -Jerod
Wayne SW/MO Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 I hope they're successful, anything to deflate the Asian carp population. I've read that Kentucky is not the only place using the term Silverfin. Kentucky probably has their share of the fish, given the long border on the Ohio. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
