Flyflinger Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 1. Never seem them. 2. I have used everything... yarn, putty, those foam footballs, toothpick things, stick ons...and nothing floats as good or cast as easy as the Thingamabobber. They may look goofy but man they get the job done. You could flaot an anvil under those things and it still wouln't sink. There is no limit to what a man can do or how far he can go if he doesn't mind who gets the credit
vanven Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 I generally use the pinch on foam indicators. If you wet the line before you stick them on most times you can actually adjust them. They can be a pain at times and will not support droppers or lead very well. They are small, cast easily, and are stealthy at least. If I am fishing a dropper I will use two pinch-ons a couple inches apart. It supports the weight and you can watch the orientation of the two indicators to detect strikes. The putty is messy and can become a projectile if you feel the need to make an actual cast outside of roll cast range. The twist on football indicators work well for short range nymphing with minimal weight. They always seem to cause a horrible knot if I am flinging them just a bit too far. They also dont float high or support weight at all. I cant fish them at all with glare on the water because the indicator doesnt ride high enough. I do like the Thingamabobbers. I have used them several times when I had to use heavy flies or lead in heavier flow. They don't work as well with really light tippett: 7x or 8x. I will occasionally find that I have been fishing for the past half hour with my indicator 1 inch above my fly. -Jerod
Njardar Posted July 22, 2010 Author Posted July 22, 2010 As always, great advice from everyonem thank you. After doing some additional research I came across this video: I'll give it a shot, certainly a lot cheaper than purchasing indicators, but then who said fly fishing was inexpensive. - Charlie
Njardar Posted July 24, 2010 Author Posted July 24, 2010 My vote is for the Thingamabobber as well. Bought some too.
Members N Wolf Posted July 31, 2010 Members Posted July 31, 2010 I have to agree on "thingamabobber". If you have used a bunch of differnt kinds you owe it to yourself to try these. They look like they would be a pain, but I prommise they are the easiest indicater to cast. They come in all sizes but I have found that even the smallest will float a size 14 tungsten beadhead. You will find however that the way they say to connect them doesnt work, they will slide down the leader unless you double it.
flyfishmaster Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 N Wolf, Have you tried the oral rubber band method to attach the Thingamabobber to your line? Here is a previous OAF link regarding the Thingamabobber. B-Ray has a great illistration on how it is done. Click here for Previous Post! later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!
