Members Rackersc Posted July 19, 2010 Members Posted July 19, 2010 I was wondering if anyone knows of any fishable/wadeable streams or creeks around St. Louis. I'm not looking for anything special, I just want to wade and throw spinning gear for bluegill, small bass etc. I fished one around Jeffco 15 years ago and had a blast, but I'm getting so old I can't remember where I went. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Al Agnew Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 In Chuck Tryon's book, he lists several small streams in Franklin, Warren, St. Charles, and Jefferson counties. None are real close to the middle of St. Louis but are probably less than an hour away from where you are. I'll list them and the counties, but let you figure out where to access them because I've only fished a couple of them. Lost Creek, Warren County Big Berger Creek, Gasconade and Franklin counties Boeuf Creek, Gasconade and Franklin counties Charrette Creek, Warren County St. Johns Creek, Franklin County Femme Osage Creek, St. Charles County Calvey Creek, Franklin County Indian Creek, Washington and Franklin counties Joachim Creek, Jefferson County Plattin Creek, Jefferson County Access is limited on most of these creeks, and according to Chuck no-trespassing signs are common. So it might take some exploring and some knocking on doors to find some good fishing water on them.
Guest P. owensby Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 I would Eliminate Femme Osage. I was their in May, and there is not much water left due to what I believe is alot of newer construction projects in the area. However I used to fish it in the early 90's as a kid and there were fish there. I guess I'm going to let the cat out of the bag on this, ( poor kitty ) but I've fished Cuiver River tributary creeks a couple times this year and Have been plesently supprised. In fact, I fished one last Sunday and was blown away, no tackle busters but probibly a 25-30 fish day with a nice scrappy 13 incher in the mix, (also caught a gar on a 3-inch Senko) all on a creek that is in Northern St.Charels Co/ southern Lincoln county. Back In April, I also caught a skinny 15-16 inch Smallie on the West Fork of the Cuiver. So if you do you're homework and use some of the new tools such as google satalite maps you can find a spot not to far from home.
Chris Barclay Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 I haven't heard good things about Femme Osage either. I've fished Gravois Creek recently and had a great time, though it's not a 'clean' body of water (so wash your hands after you are done fishing). I accessed it from Clydesdale County Park off of Grant's Trail. Chris St. Louis, MOcbarclayflyrods.combreambum.blogspot.com

Guest P. owensby Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 What did you catch? There is a big Quarry pond in the industrial park next to the creek, but it is private and the Budrovich company will run you off.
Chris Barclay Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 I saw that pond on Google maps but didn't try to access it. Good thing I didn't! I caught a ton of green sunfish and creek chub, a few bluegills and bass (largemouth), and a hybrid green/bluegill. I saw an enormous carp under the in a deep pool. All on small nymph flies. Guest P. owensby Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 How big was the Bass? Did it smell like crap in the creek?
Chris Barclay Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 The creek appeared to be clean (nice looking water and not smelly) but there are signs posted saying basically not to get in the water because of possible sewage runoff. The bass was under 6". Chris St. Louis, MOcbarclayflyrods.combreambum.blogspot.com
Guest P. owensby Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 I'm sure 100 year's ago it was a decent creek like all east flowing creek's to the Mississippi. My Dad as a kid used to catch nice bass out of Coldwater creek in the 50's near what is now the Jamestown Mall area in North St.Louis County, although that flows to the Mo....
