90* Thingamabobber Rig

Hey all,

From what I understand this rig is suppose to work pretty good.

1. Take your normal knotless leader and starting from the butt end cut yourself a 3 foot section.

2. Attach your Thingamabobber to the end of this section with a surgeons knot.

3. Attach your tippet (whatever length you need) with another surgeons knot to the end just behind the Thingamabobber.

Its suppose to get those nymphs down fast since the only part that sinks is the tippet material.

I plan on trying it out on the Current next week...that is if there isn't a flash flood down there. Its been raining like heck out here in Sullivan for days.

Has anyone ever tried this rig?

I think I understand why you would do this. It should allow the fly to drift directly below the thingamabobber with less line drag or bend. I suppose it would work where you were fishing a set depth and it would have to be shallow. Otherwise it seems to be a bit of work that sort of contradicts the reasons to use a thingamabobber. You couldnt easily adjust for water depth changes.

I do something similar when fishing deep water........I tie 3' of 25-30lb to my fly line with a nail knot...then tie the end to a big thingamabobber with a clinch not...Then I tie about 6'-7' or more of 3x to the butt section with a clinch knot...add another 12-18" of 3x to the first fly, then another 12"-18" of 4x to the second fly...Its not adjustable...but it works well if you dont mind re-rigging for each run, or for long drifts from a boat when you have someone along to keep your flies at a consistent depth...Cheers.

Interesting.

I would guess you wouldnt need this in deep water because the heavy fly or lead would keep the line rather straight up and down by default. This is a constant learning experience.

I think the main point of the rig was sink rate. Instead of pulling down a rather large leader, its dropping strait down. Maximizing time in the strike zone.
