Members Jig Posted July 23, 2010 Members Posted July 23, 2010 Does anyone know why the paddlefish are jumping out of the water like porpoising dolphins? Out this morning and mouth of Osage-Linn Creek Arm and Niangua at 31 MM and they were constantly breaking the water.
eric1978 Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 I've heard a theory that they are trying to throw parasites such as lampreys off of themselves. Who knows if it's true.
Members FishinJack Posted July 23, 2010 Members Posted July 23, 2010 I think they get stuff stuck in their gills and they can't reach in their to pull it out. So they jump. Same with carp. Carp are always mucking around in the mud. Get stuff like old leafs stuck in their gills and jump to try to remove it. Paddlefish get stuff like trigs or whatever stuck b/c they constantly sein the water for plankton. Only way to dislodge the crap is to jump and force water quickly in and out of their mouth. What does a bass do when they have something in their mouth stuck? They jump to dislodge the lure.
