Members N Wolf Posted July 29, 2010 Members Posted July 29, 2010 Yep Steve its me. And actually I know Mozingo very well. I fish there almost every week. If you are there as the sun comes up, throw big poppers in the trees and strip them like crazy. You will need to use at least 15 lb leader as the bass up here seem to have supper strength and if you cant force them out of the trees you will get broke off. Later as it warms up switch to a long hair worm of dark natural colors dropped into the pockets in the outside weed edges. This time of year the fishing gets pretty tough but if you start your morning in the small coves on the west side of the lake you still have a 50/50 chance of landing a 5 plus. If its cloudy all day, stay with the popper out in the trees. Ill be there this weekend. Ill be lookin for fly line in the air.
Members N Wolf Posted July 29, 2010 Members Posted July 29, 2010 One more thing. This sunday I was bass fishin on Poney Express and hooked up with a 3ft muskie on the 8wt and a yellow and green popper. If your up in this area you should give that a try. In three years thats my only hookup so far.
Trevor K Posted July 29, 2010 Author Posted July 29, 2010 That's cool that you know and fish Mozingo. I didn't know if anybody on this forum would know much about that lake. I'm from just north of St. Joe and went to college in Maryville, so I've fished the lake many times. I haven't been there for a couple years though. I've always really liked that lake. It is amazing how much it changed when they switched to a slot limit. We'll be in a small jon boat with just a trolling motor on it, so we'll pretty much be limited to staying in the timber on the north end of the lake. We plan on being up there at first light, so hopefully the topwater bite will be on. I'm sure we'll take some regular rods and reels too as back ups, but I'd really like to get a few bass on the fly rod. I haven't fished Pony Express in forever. A muskie on a fly rod would be pretty awesome though. I live in Iowa now, so I don't get to fish these lakes nearly as much as I used to. Can wait to get back out on Mozingo though. Even if we don't catch much it will be nice to fish it again.
Members Pflugradt Posted July 29, 2010 Members Posted July 29, 2010 Shoot Trevor, Wolfie and myself are both in St Joe.... you should look us up some time and we can exchange some flies. ideas, fishing stories, and all that kinda jazz. Maybe even go get a line wet together. I told you those muskies would tear you apart over there. I've had 2 hook ups on the 10wt and they come off really fast if you're not careful. Neither of mine have come to hand though. Steve Check out my warm water flytying and flyfishing how to.

We need to get a bit more serious about that in September, I still have a hand full of the red/white, white/yellow, and white marshmallow bangers hiding here at the house for just that purpose. Trevor K Posted July 29, 2010 Author Posted July 29, 2010 Wow! There are other people around St. Joe that fly fish. I never knew that.
Members N Wolf Posted July 30, 2010 Members Posted July 30, 2010 The water temp in the creek on the north end is a bit high this time of year. If you launch at the middle ramp you can run strait across the lake and be on good fish pretty quick. That isnt really an option if there is any wind or you are in a boat smaller than 15'. You may be ok in the creek if you get out there just before first light when its still cool. I dont know if I'm gonna take my fly rods or not. I have to pre fish for the tournament I have next weekend.
Trevor K Posted July 30, 2010 Author Posted July 30, 2010 Yeah, I figured the water would be pretty warm at the north end of the lake this time of the year, but that's pretty much the only option with just a little jon boat and a trolling motor. We sold our Nitro last year, so this will have to do for the time being. Hopefully if we get up there at first light we will be able to pick up a few fish. Hopefully I'll be able to get down there earlier in the year next year. Just been busy and its over a 3 hour drive from where I live now. Thanks for the advice though. I'll post pictures if we get anything exciting.
Members Pflugradt Posted July 31, 2010 Members Posted July 31, 2010 I started fly fishing when I was growing up in Savannah at age 8 and now at 28 I don't know what I would do without a fly rod in my hand. There are a few of us in the St Joe area, heck we even had a half arsed tying club kinda thingy for a couple years until I lost the time to keep it together. I'm sending a PM your way Trevor.
