I dont think it is ever cold enough for neoprene in SW Missouri. The water is always the same temp and you can layer your torso.

And layer your legs, too. Use layers of wicking synthetics, and as long as your waders are breathable, you shouldn't get too moist in there. I wouldn't recommend jeans. Cotton loses all insulating properties when wet and if you sweat they will only make you colder. All the big box fishing stores, as well as stores like REI and Alpine Shop, have synthetic underlayers. The good ones may actually cost you as much as neoprene waders would, but you'll be much more comfortable.

My neoprene waders were not as warm as my breathable ones wearing the same clothing underneth. The only thing that really got cold was my feet but when I started wearing my hunting socks solved that problem. I fished one night when it was 22deg F. in the breathable waders and was comfortable from the chest down.

I agree with the other posters. Regular breathable waders are much better than neoprene even in winter. I almost always wear fleece pants under my breathables and I've always been pretty warm and comfortable.

I agree, Fleece is the key. The fleece wader pants are nice, the stirrups keep everything in place.

I agree with what you have seen posted above. A decent breathable set of waders is the key. I have 2 pairs of fleece liners in different weights. I break out the heavy pair for winter along with some warmer socks. In the summer I wear a light layer of fleece and tube socks.

Your head and hands are usually where you lose the most heat when it gets chilly. I fish at night frequently and by October I might be wearing a light stocking cap at night just to slow down heat loss. Even during the summer it can get a bit chilly and might require a heavier long sleeve shirt at night. The fog is damp and tends to be closer to the river temperature than the temp on the parking lot.

Don't forget that you likely won't need anything under your waders in October. I wouldn't overdue the fleece. I've had great luck with Hodgman waders, not the cheapest, but something above that.
