ollie Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 When I say early I mean early! We took off from the house at 4:30 in morning to get to our site and when we arrived we had to have the flashlights out to see what we were doing! Ah, but all was well from my point of view. When we hit the water the sky was just starting to get light, the sun hadn't even come over the treeline yet. I started out throwing a fluke and never looked back. First fish came right away in some shallow water and a chunky largemouth came to hand. About 15" and fat! After that it was smallie after smallie, but nothing really big. The biggest smallie was around 14". The big fish of the day was a big 'ol cattie. Threw that fluke up against a laydown and wham! He took it like a bass and took off with my drag screaming. When I finally landed him he measured 21". I was a little surprised when he came up. He was also very hungry to take that fluke, but then again I have had catties take just about anything before. When it started getting hot we took off around 11:00. Great fishing altogether. Members kayaker Posted August 2, 2010 Members Posted August 2, 2010 How is the river level Ollie. I am bringing my two boys and father and nephew to Hog Heaven this week. Camping Wednesday and Thursday and heading home Friday before the crazy canoe traffic starts up on the weekend. I heard it is a little low, but we are floating kayaks. I brought my boys down the same time last summer and they are dying to get back. We caught a ton of fish last summer at this time, I hope I can get them on some more. My brother and I just got back from the little niangua this past weekend, it is about the only river you can float on a weekend and not fight a ton of canoes, we started early in the morning and only one group of canoes caught up to us. Im putting a post about the trip on the "other ozark waters" forum.
ollie Posted August 2, 2010 Author Posted August 2, 2010 One word about the water level, "low". It's really about where it is suppose to be for this time of the year. Even in yaks you will have to get out and drag in some areas, but the fishing is really good early in the morning and later in the evening. I just get too hot in the middle of the day to care about fishing. I'd rather be swimming when it gets that hot. Buzz Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Sounds like a great time. The smallmouth are really biting good right now. If fishing was easy it would be called catching.
