Members LuvToFish Posted August 11, 2010 Members Posted August 11, 2010 Hi All! This is my first post here though I've been lurking for awhile Me and a friend are heading down to BS tonight and will be staying through the weekend. It's been 20 years since I've fished there and was wondering if I could get some tips on where the best spots are in both zone 1 and 2, best choice of fly's, techniques that work well there, etc. I've been following the reports from Weaver's for the past few weeks so I've got some idea as to what has been working. Thanks for any and all tips! -luvtofish
XP 590 Posted August 11, 2010 Posted August 11, 2010 My personal favorite area is zone 2 from the bridge down to the end. Below the bridge there's a nice riffle and tail out. Then further down, I like the area below the hatchery outlet (pellet hole) to the whistle bridge. My best luck lately has been with size 18 tungsten zebra midges, grey and olive, or a small peach glo bug. The water was way down when I was there last Sunday so I was only fishing 1 to 2 feet below the indicator.
stlfisher Posted August 11, 2010 Posted August 11, 2010 So many good spots at Bennett. I would just start at the spring in zone 1 and work my way down to the end of zone two stopping for lunch at the lodge on my way down. If you have been reading Weaver's you have a good idea of what will work. I would use light line and small flies this weekend. The water is low and probably very clear. Put the stuff on the bottom and you should be ok.
Gavin Posted August 11, 2010 Posted August 11, 2010 Wear some polarized glasses and spend some time looking for fish, and note types of water they are holding in......Fish were the fish are and not where they aint. Cheers.
rcguy Posted August 12, 2010 Posted August 12, 2010 Just about every place in zone 1 or 2 can be good. I like to start up by the island in zone 2, myself. Sometimes you can tear them up on a john Deere. If no takers, try a glowball with a midge dropper (choose a color but make olive one of them). Work your way across the stream with your casts to cover the water. Try drifting deep by the moss beds and then experiment with different depths if you need to. Mend, mend, mend to get a drag-free float. During all of this it is important to IGNORE the guy who walks up beside you and throws out a big orange rooster tail and catches 3 or 4 right out in front of you. Don't get frustrated!..he is only purging out the really STUPID fish. Stick with your game plan. Also try small if you need to..size 20 midges and nymphs. That's my 2 cents. Lot of things to try. Have a good trip. May be you can get back down Sunday and Monday the 29th and 30th. A bunch of us are meeting a noon Sunday at the Park Resturaunt (behind the store) for lunch. Jerry
Members LuvToFish Posted August 20, 2010 Author Members Posted August 20, 2010 Thanks for all the great tips! I ended up fishing mostly below the waterfall in zone 1. I used an olive micro jig with a nymph dropper. The jig helped to get me down deep where the fish seemed to be holding. Occasionally I would switch out the nymph which seemed to get the bite going again. What a wonderful fishery! I sure wish I could make it down there this weekend, unfortunately I have to take care of all the stuff I neglected by going down last weekend. Good Luck and save some for seed! -Luvtofish
Wayne SW/MO Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 Good Luck and save some for seed! Don't worry, the hatchery has plenty. Its always hard to pinpoint an area, but if you want to move some, fishing the outlet to the Whistle always seems decent. I'm referring to the period after the morning rush. First thing the key is to be where the stocking truck has been, but the crowds take the fun out of it so I wait until mid morning. If you want to fish the siren, hit the Whistle, but be there early. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
