Flyflinger Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 I am going to be adding a new rod to the armory. I am thinking of a 7wt for tossing heavy bass bugs..or would 6wt be enough? I have been trying to throw them with my 8.5ft/5wt Gloomis...but it really can't handle the larger poppers. Any sugestions?? There is no limit to what a man can do or how far he can go if he doesn't mind who gets the credit

I have been trying to throw them with my 8.5ft/5wt Gloomis...but it really can't handle the larger poppers. Any sugestions?? It is generally recomended that you should use an 8wt for casting big bass bugs. Especially those made of deer hair. The lightest I would go is a 7wt and step down the size of the fly. For casting my really huge bass bugs made of cork, foam or deer hair, I generally use my 9wt since all I have is a 5wt, 7wt and 9wt. I thought abut getting an 8wt, but the 9wt covers that pretty good. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
stlfisher Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 I would go with a 7 (smallie) or 8 weight (LM). I have a 6 and it does not cast the large stuff well enough.
Gavin Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 I use a 7wt most of the time....sometimes an 8 or 9wt...It just depends on the size of the bugs that I'm tossing..
Randall Posted August 14, 2010 Posted August 14, 2010 I built a 7 weight Cabelas FT that has enough backbone to punch out most of the bigger stuff and handles heavier streamers like circus-peanuts if I really need it to. I'm sure a six could work in an absolute pinch, but it wouldn't be an enjoyable experience. Cute animals taste better.
Outside Bend Posted August 14, 2010 Posted August 14, 2010 Most 7 weights ought to allow you to throw larger poppers and streamers, no problem. An 8 weight, though, will better enable you to horse largemouth out from cover- weedbeds, docks, bruspiles, etc. <{{{><
