Guest csfishinfool Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 Put in at Mill Creek around six thirty, decided to give the old spoon a try on some boat docks. We had two keepers by about seven, both Spots. Caught a few fish on a drop shot and a shaky head. One of which went about three, also a Spot. That was the slowest part of the day for us. Around nine we headed up lake to fish a spot I had been looking at for about a year, and never gave it a whirl untill today. This is the first time I have ever done this kind of fishing. My boat was in 100+ feet of water, and i was fishing trees . It was a Rippn Lipz extravaganza...We called the two 15" spots with all three+ pound fish, one smallie, two largemouth, and another spot. All of these fish were stuffed, and loosing some shad in our boat. Our best five were right around 15 lbs. Today was probably the biggest learning experience I've had while on the water. What an awesome day! It makes you wonder with 100+ feet of water, and trees that are 50 feet tall how many fish are actually down there!!!! I'm pretty sure its unimaginable

motoman Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 Great report cs! That's exciting stuff. I've only had a handful of times when an unassuming spot I've drooled over pays off. But when it does, it's magic!
Billfo Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 So you were catchin them at 50 feet deep ??? Whoaaa !!!! Gotta try that ! T-RockJaws Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 When fishing that way, are you casting the jig or just dropping it straight down to them off the side of the boat? Never tried this, but have been wanting to give it a go.

Never tried this, but have been wanting to give it a go. I was casting the jig into about thirty feet of water and counting it down to the bottom. After that I would drag it until i hit a tree. The whole object wasn't to fish the bottom, it was to drape that line over limbs and work the bait through the tops of trees. When i would make contact with the deeper trees I would work it up to the top and when i cleared the limb i would engage my reel and let it fall back down. Almost all of the fish I caught came when i cleared the top of the tree and engaged my reel.
Jason Essary Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 CS, How well did the footballs come throu the trees? Most of the time I get hung with footballs. Spider jigs seem to work better for me. Spider jigs seem to work better for me. To tell you the truth I think it may have a lot to do with the rod you use. The football jig for me is really good at coming through the trees, but I'm using a medium heavy rod with an extra fast tip. When working it through the trees you have to let the rod do the work, just like you would with a crank bait. Pull the bait through the cover, not hop or reel it through. Plus the bait is heavy enough that if you do get a bit hung you can usually engage the reel and it will let its self free.
