eric1978 Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 It is some kind of sculpin. They're neither invasive nor protected as far as I know. And yes, they are part alien.

troutfiend1985 Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 looks like a sculpin to me. Great trout bait too. I second that, both the sculpin and the bait part. I hired a guide in Yellowstone, and he talked about being a kid and using those as bait. That's illegal in Montana, no clue whether its legal down here. But he said he caught his biggest fishing using sculpins as bait. “The greatest menace to freedom is an inert people” J. Brandeis

Thom Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 ON the white in Arkansas they catch them with small hooks off of the boat docks and put them in minnow bucket and hover them over big browns. Very effective but not my cup of tea. It does work I seen a guide out of Sportsman catch several big Browns one week that I was there. Thom Harvengt
fly2fish Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 Dang, now the secret of Taneycomo is out and everyone will know why the pine squirrel sculpin and PMS flys are so popular.
Greg Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 I agree it is a sculpin. And probably exactly the one your FIL thought. http://www4.samford.edu/schools/artsci/biology/zoology/vertzoo-05s/pages/5.htm Greg "My biggest worry is that my wife (when I'm dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it" - Koos Brandt Greg Mitchell
soggyfeet Posted August 28, 2010 Author Posted August 28, 2010 Man I need to start tieing thicker and longer streamers. Chief I've been real busy the last year or so and havent been able to keep up with everything including fishing Tany. I have been able to get my 3 year old out a couple times to fish and now thats all he wants to do and all my 2 year old wants is to get out on the boats so it wont be too long before I get back at it. Members catfish307 Posted August 28, 2010 Members Posted August 28, 2010 Caught one myself a couple of weeks ago. Notice one of Phil's sculpin/orange jig's brought this beast in.
