Stump bumper Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 I fished around the Nursrey pond and blackburn creek and was really surprised how many bank cruisers I saw in the middle of the day. I hit the lake about 3pm until dark. There were alot of little spots in the creek feeding on shad and minnows that were thick. Water temp was around 78 and clear. Did a little trolling and picked up two eyes one 16in one 17 in and more spots than I could count, stoped trolling because every time I would start I would have a little 10in spot on the line. Out in the main lake I saw about 50 gar feeding on a point and decided to play with them so I threw a Sammy at them and brought back good largemouth that were feeding with the gar. Switched to an unwieghted trick work and still pulled back bass, where were all those keepers Sunday when I was fishing for money?
J-Doc Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 Nice report Stump. I was just thinking of heading out that direction Sat. morning for a couple of hours. Funny you mention feeding gar and bass. I've always viewed gar as a bad sign. Whenever I see gar feeding on top, I almost never catch bass. Maybe I've been fishing the wrong type of baits. I've tried topwater, cranks, spinnerbaits, etc. and never caught bass when gar were around. I can definately see how they would feed together though. If the food is grouped together, they do not discriminate on the company. What were you trolling, small crankbaits? Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. He will treat you like family!!! I owe fishinwrench a lot of thanks. He has been a great mechanic with lots of patience!

jeb Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 There sure are a lot of gar up top back in the Avoca Cove lately, too. I went out this morning and did well on big spots on mid-lake, main channel humps/rock piles. Caught several 2+ lbers, with the big one at 2.57lbs, according to my digital scale, at least. That one was quite the chunky football! I attached a couple of pictures of it. Not huge, but a dandy spot. Mostly topwater stuff for the spots. Looks like there was some kind of tourney this morning, blasting off out of PC Marina at 7am. John B 08 Skeeter SL210, 225F Yamaha
Quillback Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 JB. that's one heck of a spot for Beaver! Nice photo also, really good pic of a healthy fish.
jeb Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 Thanks Jeff. I should have taken a picture of him sideways. WIDE LOAD! He was puking up shad as I was fighting him. Almost all the fish I caught had several followers. At one point, I bet I caught 10 spots in 20 casts. They were after it for a while this morning! Lost a top water plug to another nice one. Just about in the boat and he took one more run and popped the line. It was only 6lb test, but fresh line. My fault for not loosening up the drag more. John B 08 Skeeter SL210, 225F Yamaha
jeb Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Been a while since I've seen much striper activity, or at least that I know about. I figure most of the lazy boils I'm seeing are gar right now. Some more pictures, from this morning: 2.73 pound spotted bass: Another picture of it: 19 inch walleye: John B 08 Skeeter SL210, 225F Yamaha
Hogfan Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Nice spot Jeb! I've been scuba diving down around Lost Bridge lately and have seen some really nice Kentucky's. A couple of weeks ago I came across a school of 3 to 4lb walleye's. They were hanging out in about 30ft of water around structure.
