bikehikefish Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 I'll be floating from Greer down this weekend and I'm wondering what shape the river is in and how the fishing is. Any advice is appreciated!
Brian Sloss Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 The river is below normal flows and has been a while now. It has been fishing really well lately on my guide trips with Pats rubber leg stones and size 10 prince nymphs drifted deep doing particularly well. Marabou jigs have done well too. Just got back from electro-fishing with the MDC, they will be back at it on Thursday as well. That could adversely effect the fishing for a few days after the shocking. Plenty of in there though. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497

The electro fishing project may have the opposite effect, it normally purges their stomach contents and they go on a feed to fill it back up. Any nice ones on the adventure? Any walleye, smallies, goggle eye of any size? "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
Tito Degiosio Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 Been Ctaching alot of smallies and google eye lately some nice smallies have started to turn up down river and the google have been doing well to late in the evenings Have fished the whole trout river system over the last few days and here is what I determined from it Greer Crossing to buck Bay(turners) can't keep them off the hook Black rubber legs been my fly of choice size 6 long shank caught alot of fish that were shaped like little footballs also the fish in that section have started showing off there spawning colors really well also lots of otters in this section now seen three at once at log jam I'm gonna start trapping I think Turner to whitten Fishing has been great early in the morning hours but coming to almost dead stand still by mid afternoon (Typical)day of fishing that part of the river system found some 5 pound plus trout over the summer including one that would of pushed 8 pounds in tumbling shoals plenty of fish still in that section but also plenty of other fisherman Fly of choice in that water (Crawdad patterns)and black stones size 8 with Egg dropper alot of google eye in this section with a few smallies Now the section I use to know nothing about whitten to halls bay (didn't fish below halls bay) found one really Big trout Feeding in 3inches of water never hooked her but did notice quite a few Nice trout were in this section more then I thought I will be back as soon as I get the chance there was a great spawn last year in this section have caught and seen alot of trout under 5 inches long over the whole river system but mostly from greer to turners and from whitten to halls bay used sinking line to get down in the deep holes with my normal flies put extra split shot something new I been playing with and have started to have great success with the deep 10 foot plus holes they hold fish of nice size but swinging a fly though them that deep can be tricky fished normal floating line in the lower sections of river Fly of choice Big rubberlegs BLK,BRW Found some big beavers at the old river talking 60 plus pounds If I had to guess can't wait to catch one in a trap this winter water levels have been low in places but deeper in others due to the flood last year the shoal below whitten boat ramp has been piled up with gravel and making the big whole in front of the boat ramp deeper this is the case all over the river system now to sum it up Get out there and fish they are there and in good numbers And wackyworm had a great time out there let me know how the rest of your float went and who won the fish a thon Tito DeGiosio & Cydney Siri Pleasnt Valley Cabin and Camping (Home of the fresh baked pies) www.pleasant-valley.biz 970-249-8330

bikehikefish Posted September 21, 2010 Author Posted September 21, 2010 Thanks for the information. They shocked it? Just my luck, and not the first time. A few years ago I was fishing the Meramec just below the spring, not catching anything, and a guy in a jon boat checking his traps stopped by and said, "You know, MDC had shocking training in this pool yesterday, they shocked it REAL good!" But I'll be floating and fishing anyway. If you see three guys in yellow kayaks, say hi.
Mark Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 Great report Tito. The Ste. Gen. boys will be down in a few weeks for our annual fall float, always the same time as Brian's Fall Fly Fishermen BBQ. Can't wait!! The river is always beautiful that time of years with clear water, trees starting to turn colors, not much river traffic with turkey season going on, and cooler temperatures make for great camping Of course I wouldn't mind being on the river today with temps in the low 90s - too hot for late Sept.
Brian Sloss Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 I generally like to give the fish about two days before I hit an area that has been shocked because of the stress put on the fish by the shocking. By Sat they should be biting well again I would hope. Sounds like you found a girdle bug, which I have started carrying lately and it has shown pretty good results. Glad you did well with it. We found more young of the year trout in this years sample than I have seen in a number of years going along with the electroshock crew. It was what I thought might happen as we have been catching some all summer. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497

Did the shock crew roll out anything other than rainbow trout? "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
