yaknar Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 Put in up from Kerr this morning. Fishing was a little slow. I caught a few small smalls and a few pumpkinseeds. I decided to try a different Bee today. The one I normally use is a Rebel Bee but I had a new one to try. I'm not sure I like it's action but, as you can see, I had good results.
Chief Grey Bear Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 Hey that is a really nice fish! I have a couple of those Bumble Bugs myself. I need to fish them more than I do. And now is the time of year to be tossing one on creek. Is the one in the second picture a newer or older version? The ones that I have are the same style as the one in the first pic. I use a very slow retrieve where it has a slow wobble on the surface. But I have also fished it just under the surface with a medium retrieve. eric1978 Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 I've never seen a bee do anything except lay on the surface and buzz its wings. Sorry, but I don't get the bumble bug crankbaits. Novelty item if you ask me. Nice fish, though.

Novelty item if you ask me. Nice fish, though. Yeah, one of my brothers loves those and the "Crickhopper" cranks, too. He does catch fish on them, so it goes to show you the fish either aren't that smart, or they are that hungry!
yaknar Posted October 3, 2010 Author Posted October 3, 2010 Let's not be bee haters. I also have a new grasshopper but, since I pack light in the kayak, it has not proven itself and earned a permanent place in the tackle box.
Al Agnew Posted October 4, 2010 Posted October 4, 2010 Never saw a grasshopper wobble, either. Small shallow running crankbaits have their place, and will catch fish. But I'm pretty sure the fish don't hit them because they think they are bees or grasshoppers. They hit them because they are moving, look alive, and are small enough to eat easily. It probably wouldn't matter what critter they look like in your hand. Crankbaits only come reasonably close to imitating minnows, and even then the wobble of the crankbait is somewhat different than how a minnow looks swimming. My homemade crankbait isn't shaped like anything natural, and looks nothing like any critter I ever saw...but it catches fish quite well.
yaknar Posted October 4, 2010 Author Posted October 4, 2010 I use these as topwater. I bring along a popper too. I fish creeks and streams.Early in the morning toss one along side some grass or brush, let it set a few seconds, twitch it a couple time, bring it back a few inches under the surface as it makes a wake, stop and repeat. I have Bombers and Warts for my crankbaits. I guess I better not post a picture of the spider.
fishinSWMO Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 Sure, lets see the spider. I have seen the crickhoppers and bees before. They work great if you are using ultra light tackle, and dont mind catching a little of everything. Jeremy Dodson
Chief Grey Bear Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 Yeah lets see the spider. I haven't seen that new crickhopper. But that older one, I have caught a ton of fish on that color in the late fall. It seems to match the color of a true grasshopper at this time of year. I used a green with orange belly hopper in the summer. Reble makes a few kid friendly, novelty items. But they produce results too. And that has a three fold effect. They sell. They catch fish. They introduce young kids to the sport and keeps them occupied by making it fun. OzarksRiverman Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 I bought a bumble bee last spring and haven"t had a bite on it yet. It really pissed me off, and a I tried to forget about it. Thanks for bringing it up.
