First off I want to thank you all for the info found in this forum. I've learned a lot on what to expect, how to catch fish, taneycomo etiquette, etc... by just crowsing through the topics.

I'm planning to come down this coming weekend just to get away from the city and relax a bit; its been aprox 5 yrs since Ive been to Taney. I have a 18' bass boat but would rather stick to wading if possible and not have to worry about boating hazards being that its my first time on the water there is so long. But the last thing I want to do is go down there to find all generators running and no wadable water. You guys think I should tow the boat down just to make sure I'm not stuck without reasonable fishing for the weekend or will I be ok and find some wadable water?

My advice:

Take the boat. Coopers creek is an easy launch place. Stop off at Lilley's for last minute advice and tackle and then you can head either up or down stream. It will likely be crowded at the outlets on w/e and you can take the boat and just either tie off at lookout island (behind the Island out of fast water) and wade there or anchor off if the water is really fast below the Island. Far side of stream at Fall Creek offers the same option if the water is running 2+ gates. Just fish the seam in both places either from the boat or wading is possible. Just be sure not to anchor in the fast water in the 18 foot boat but out of the fast water is OK. (common sense)

You still have the option of fighting the crowds and shufflers at the Dam.

Lots more options if you have a boat. I am heading down the following w/e and will take my boat even if I fish the upper area.

Tight lines.

Next weekend? Hey, if you see something big, green, and LOUD on Taney give ma a yell. Would like to meet you. Going to be a Lilley's on Oct. 21-24, and probably fish Lookout down most of the time.

Thanks for the advice, I'll tow her down. Sounds like a great way to get away from the crowds; plus if I cant figure trout out I can go for some smallies on the lake. I'll make sure to post up how it goes before you guys head down next weekend.

The family and I went down in August and I had the same dilemma. I had never taken a boat out on Taneycomo except once I rented one and didn't stray far from the marina for fear of hitting underwater obstacles. Again this time I was afraid and we reserved a rental boat for one day, just because I was too afraid to try boating there again. I later decided against it and decided to take my own boat and use the money we had paid to reserve a boat and rent a stall instead.

It was the best decision made, hands down! It was wonderful to walk down to the marina and jump in the boat anytime we felt like it and we had a ball out there, even though it was a little on the hot side. We still didn't go all that far from where we were docked because we really didn't have to. We lodged just below short creek and motored up to fall creek then drifted back down below Lilleys. Most of the time we didn't even go that far, again because we caught plenty of fish right where we were at. My 9 year old son caught a beautiful 7.5 lb rainbow right at short creek.

My advice is to do as I did. Go slow and watch where the other boats go and follow them if you don't hear them hitting rocks. Ha Ha. But believe me we saw and heard numerous boats hitting rocks. When the water wasn't running it was so clear the I would watch the bottom on the drift down and take notes of depth and obstructions underwater.

Go ahead and take it down with you, you'll be glad you did. Good Luck, Chris

Sounds like a pretty good trip, I'd sure like to stumble into a 'bow like your son did! I do have a navionics chip for my dash mounted GPS, haven't checked to see if they have Taneycomo on there but I'd guess that if they do, navigating may be pretty simple.

Make sure you are not following a jet boat!

How cruel! LOL

I still love the expressions I get when running over the shallow flat near Short Creek while everybody else is out in the channel.

Don't know who has a more shocked look. The fishermen when I run between Busters Stump and the bank at Short Creek, or the Blue Herons when I run between them and the bank!
