dennis boatman Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 I have been watching Davie Mcphail videos on Youtube. This man is a true artist when it comes to fly tying. His attention to detail makes his flies something special to behold. The techniques he uses are simple, yet complex. He explains the process in great detail, making his videos both educational and entertaining. For you who have not seen his videos, I strongly suggest viewing him. I am sure hour tying skills will improve. And best of all, its free. A strike indicator is just a bobber...
Terry Beeson Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 Dennis, I will echo what you say about Davie's videos. It's a pleasure listening to him with his accent and I am certainly with you on the "simple, yet complex" comment about his techniques. He makes it look so easy sometimes, but when I try it, it does not come out quite the same... Practice, practice, practice... Yes, I agree... If you have not watched some of his videos, go to youtube and search for Davie McPhail... eric1978 Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 Yeah, he's pretty incredible. I've been watching his videos since I started tying. This one is my favorite...I haven't tied any (I think it would take me about 30 minutes to produce one of 'em), but it's an awesome looking bug.
Terry Beeson Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 ...I think it would take me about 30 minutes to produce one of 'em... It takes me that long to get the lead tape to look that good... eric1978 Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 It takes me that long to get the lead tape to look that good... No kidding...he's a true master of the art. That lead tape gives me the fits.
flytyer57 Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 I hate the way he makes it look so easy to apply those jungle cock eyes on a fly. Or they wings on a spey fly. They can be a real pain in the butt, but he makes it look so easy. I've tried duplicating what he does and still cannot for the life of me, do it as easily as he does. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.

Trout Commander Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 My latest McPhail Bug....McFailed!!1! Hey I have got a whole pile of those! How do you prefer to fish yours? I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted. The latest Trout Commander blog post: Niangua River Six Pack
dennis boatman Posted November 12, 2010 Author Posted November 12, 2010 Sometimes when my flies arent "up to par", I just put a match to them and burn off the material and reuse the hooks. Do this outside the house, as it does smell of a burnt duck. A strike indicator is just a bobber...
eric1978 Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 I tried one of his caddis emergers just for the fun of it. I didn't have any antron so I used tan dubbing for the body. He sure makes it look easy...it did end up taking me nearly a half hour to tie this one fly. Pretty sweet, though.
