I'd like to put a Hendrix Outdoors HO1 in your hands. Fully machined reel, good looks, great reel for the money $100 for the 2010 model. Improved HO1 will be out in January with a better look, better drag, and $120 price tag. The HO2 is a cast aluminum with a great value if you don't mind the cast vs. machined.

You didn't say where you are located, so can't tell you where to look at these reels.

Terry,

I live in Springfield. I haven't gone to any of the local fly shops yet, just been browsing various forums.

If you didn't want to do any research and spend a middle-ground amount of money and probably never have to spend it again, I'd say go with a Ross CLA. Good drag, machined, tend to stand behind their product. You can go cheaper if you are picky - there's some good bargains out there like the Cabelas reels. The Konic I believe is a cast reel (??) which to me takes it out of the "long run" category. But Lamson seems like they have great stuff.

Hmac... Go see Tim and Fred at Backcountry Outfitters across from Incredible Pizza on Campbell. They can show you the SUPERIOR Hendrix reels as well as those JUNK Ross, Lamson, etc. etc... :goodjob:

(Hey... I'm the Hendrix sales rep... what did you expect me to say? )

Do a Google search for Hendrix Outdoors and try to find a home page where you can view their products. I came up with nothing. If these were such great reels, how do you find any info on them or the company that makes them?

I did find a page that sells the reels but there was no info given about the reels. What are they made of? Where are they made? What about warranty repairs?

At least with a Ross, you know you're buying from a reputable company that stands behind their products and you can find them if you need to.

I have a G. Loomis Venture on my 5 wieght and it has worked great for three years, and I see it working great for years to come. Very smooth drag, a little heavy but that has never bothered me. At 100$ you can't beat it in my opinion. I think you should check it out.

I also have a Lamson Guru on an 8 wieght and it is very nice. A little pricey at 200$ but I love mine for carp and bass.

But if you're only going to be doing trout fishing and a little bass fishing with this reel I would go with the Loomis.

Just put a Loomis Venture on my Orvis and took the Battenill off and put in on my loaner rod. The Bateniill has been notning but trouble. I tried the venture out on a recent trip to Taney and then a few times at Busch. LOVE IT. SMOOTH RETRIEVE AND DRAG AND SEALED BRAKE. It is also easy to open and clean. A Barganin at 100 dollars.

Good morning,

I've been bass fishing for 25+ years, decided to pick up fly fishing this summer and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Mostly fishing Taneycomo but will also fish NFoW.

I have a couple of 5 wt rods - a Scott that is a loaner and a BPS rod.

I'm looking to buy a reel, something that will serve me well for years to come. I've done some searching on my own but haven't seen much in comparisons or what reel is better than another or why. I've seen many good comments about the Lamson Konic, although I'm not opposed to spending more than that.

Any recommendations?

Thanks

Check out what Lilley's has at their shop. I noticed some nice reels on top of the fly case near the counter at very reasonable prices. Just call the shop and see what Phil has and what are the prices. He is usually hard to beat on gear and tieing material etc.

I think Phil is still out of the country but you might want to call when he gets back.

You are going to get a lot of different answers. Partly because there are so many good serviceable fly reels out there. My experience is the opposite of Thoms. My Orvis original battenkill is my favorite reel. I've had it for quite a few years and it works very well. I also have a Ross Cimarron that I like and also a Teton reel that I like quite a bit.

FT... I'm the sales rep for this area for Hendrix Outdoors, and they are for real and they stand behind their products. The website is scheduled to be up December 1st. Until then, if you need to put your hands on a reel, just let me know. I can tell you they are made in China to Hendrix specifications, not shelf items. They are made from aircraft grade aluminum. Warranty is simply a replacement of manufacturing defects. I should have samples of the 2011 models in a couple of weeks.

Ross was just bought out by Scientific Anglers / 3M. Their future is questionable at this time. The industry is guessing and rumors are flying, but honestly, no hard evidence of anything yet. May not change a thing. But, all companies are at risk in this day and time, no matter how long they've been around.

Yep. More crap flooding this country from China.
