jdavis Posted December 10, 2005 Posted December 10, 2005 I'm a novice fly fisherman. Any advice for fishing Taney at night right now? How will the moon phase effect fly selection and fishing in general?
Root Admin admin Posted December 10, 2005 Root Admin Posted December 10, 2005 I have an article on night fishing under the Taneycomo forum- you might start there. As for night fishing, first have your casting down pretty good cause even the intermediate caster will be challenged the first time he or she throws line into the darkness. It's all feel. Second, fish Taney in the daytime and learn at least some of the lake pertaining to the bottom. You don't want to step where you shouldn't and you don't want to be fishing in 3 inches of water unknowingly. Get my drift. If you want to get educated fast, hire a guide the first time and he'll show you a few things. See the guide section off ozarkanglers's homepage for info on guides. Brian or Jeremy would be glad to take you. Moon phazes- I think everyone will have their opinion. Mine is I like no moon to half moon or cloudy nights. I have done well with a full moon but not as often.
Leonard Posted December 10, 2005 Posted December 10, 2005 Im with Phil on this one... If you go out night fishing MAKE sure you know the bottom... I night fish alot... and even I have found thing (big rocks) in the dark that Ive never notice during the day... And yes it very IMPORTANT to know the bottom... and how deep some areas can get... and know the woods... you dont want to be in a place where you cant get out in a hurry... Ive myself have seen them turn on all 4 generators within 15 minutes... and by the time you get close to the bank it gets really swift.... At night they will turn on 2 generators, one right after the other (blow a horn.. and within 5 seconds blow another)... when they do that it really can starts coming up quick.. last thing to really beware of is the rocks on the bottom... some are as slick as snot!!! Ive seen alot of guys fall in at night (about 5x as many as during the day)... even on the bank.. where there is no water.. those rocks are very slippery.. and when it gets this cold some of those will have ice on them... the rock that I hate walking on at night is... the deep holes up by the cable above chute 1 (I hate fishing this area at night because of the rocks.. but it holds some big fish) the big run between chutes 1 and 2 the bank between chutes 2 and 3 I never have waded into the rocking chair at night... but I did fish it one day... I myself would want to wade it at night... it was very slick in the day...I fell twice that day I fished it!!! the boat ramp on the hatchery side... there are some very big and very slick rock in this area...(I have fell in this area quit a few times) I cant say anything about the area around KOA.. I dont get down that far at night.. I like to stay close the the cars... just incase I do slip.. I dont have to walk far in the cold http://www.taneycomonights.com
jdavis Posted December 11, 2005 Author Posted December 11, 2005 Fished for about four hours last night. Could not seem to find a pattern that really got the fish hot. Caught six on various flies and techniques. This seems to be about as well as I ever do at night. Should I be catching more?
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted December 11, 2005 Root Admin Posted December 11, 2005 You may have hit an off night... fish bit like crazy all day yesterday and again today, so far. Guys coming in from the trophy area this morning said they couldn't keep them off their hooks, fishing with scuds around the narrows. Good chop on the water and tons of midges. Last time I went night fishing I couldn't get bit- not because I was doing anything wrong- cause they just weren't biting. Keep trying.
Wayne SW/MO Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 jdavis, did you try stripping anything? Leonard, what do you have on the bottom of your boots, I don't find it that slick there. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Leonard Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 Im not sure what the bottoms are made of... There are a pair of neoprenes from bass pro.. boot waders.. It looks to be some kind of rubber.. not sure though... http://www.taneycomonights.com
loo10 Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 Best advice I can give you to help you enjoy a nite fishing on the Taney tailwater.... Keep the water on the OUTSIDE of your waders! Wayne SW/MO Posted December 12, 2005 Posted December 12, 2005 I was just curious. I use felt, and have for more years than I can remember and its hard to beat. I fish a lot of Smallies streams and wade them, they don't get the cleansing that a lot of Trout streams do and felt is mandatory. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
